In yet another admission of an uphill battle to hold onto their House majority, Republican groups are pulling funding out of a key battleground district in New York that they had hoped to flip from Democrats.
Per Punchbowl News, "MAGA Inc.-aligned groups are stopping airing TV ads in Rep. Tom Suozzi’s (D-N.Y.) district, according to AdImpact and sources tracking the race."
Suozzi's district in Long Island flipped to Republicans as recently as 2022. However, their newly elected congressman, George Santos, was swiftly buried in scandal as revelations came out about his fabricated candidate background and his extensive campaign finance fraud schemes, and expelled from the House in an overwhelming bipartisan vote.
Suozzi, who had held the seat prior before an unsuccessful run for governor, easily won back the district in the ensuing special election.
The GOP's abandonment of the district takes a possible pickup off the board. As recently as a few weeks ago they were spending heavily here, hopeful that a possible swing of Jewish voters toward the GOP could put it in play.
The withdrawal also comes amid a broader sense of fear in the GOP caucus that, despite the reassurances of party leadership in public, they are headed for an electoral wipeout when the polls close in two and a half weeks.
