Originalists should want a voting holiday

Or at least Saturday voting. Granted, the Founding Fathers didn't actually seem to put much thought into the logistics of voting, but it's clear that leaders of our newly-formed democracy thought voting should be easy for people. Tuesday is a shitty day for modern voters, but when it was chosen in 1845, from what I understand at least, the idea was that you gave people all of Monday to travel if they needed to so they could vote on Tuesday. Sunday was out as a travel day because of church. But any way you slice it, the founders didn't intend for local polling places to put up roadblocks and frustrations so "some people" give up trying to vote. That so-called originalists are more interested in proving that there's no right to control your fertility through contraception and abortion in the Constitution than they are in making sure that democratic ideals are upheld is a good indicator of how "originalism" was invented strictly to rationalize oppression.

Clueless White People On Display

Joe Scarborough and Pat Buchanan are grilling Jesse Jackson, Jr. on why the Democratic Party gets so many African-American votes yet has so few black senators, and will have none if Obama becomes President.

1-866-OUR-VOTE works

A few days ago, a friend of mine decided to check out his polling place on a whim. He discovered it was inside a gated community. So he asked the guard what the plan was for making sure the gates were open all day. The guard didn't have a clue, which alarmed my friend, and he called me. I referred him to 866-OUR-VOTE, and they gave him a case file, told him that the situation was unusual, and told him that if the gates aren't open come this morning, to call back and they'll have a legal team out immediately. This wasn't in Texas, which is usually super laid back, believe it or not.

Just Voted

Total time in line was about 50 minutes, and the length of the line was the same when I got in as when I left.

A lot of parents with kids at the polls, which is probably my favorite part of the whole thing. Well, that and the actual voting.

Election day open thread

For those of you who are voting today, share your experience. (I voted last Friday, and shot video at the polls).

Emptying Out The Benches

I think that one of my favorite things today is going to see which F-grade pundits get toted out to fill the next 18 hours of coverage on the news networks.

How Much Do You Love This Mess?

Granted, today will be nerve-racking for everyone, but today's still my favorite day of the year. There's something uniquely wholesome about the practice of Election Day, over a hundred million people headed to similar places to do a similar - and meaningful - thing. It doesn't involve the consumerism of our other national holidays and hallmarks. It's a day of reward for true believers, the ones who've spent all their spare hours folding mail or knocking on doors for their chosen candidate.
