Interview on the secret fundamentalists behind the throne
While I think all my interviews are good at Reality Cast, I have to draw everyone's attention to this week's. Jeff Sharlet is talking about his new book The Family, a group of fundies that aren't like the religious right we all know and don't love, but in fact may be more powerful. Genuinely new information for me; I can't wait to read his book.
Tucker Carlson still has a job?
Seriously, he actually did this
It's too much to hope that MSNBC will fire this asshole - unless it's for stealing Chris Matthews' schtick - but you might drop MSNBC a line about this anyway:
Discussing Sen. Hillary Clinton's decision to remain in the presidential race, MSNBC senior campaign correspondent Tucker Carlson, during the May 27 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, said of Clinton, "Look, she's a trapped animal, there's absolutely no question about it. As I've thought to myself many times, if you've ever tried to get your cat in a box, you know what Hillary Clinton is doing right now." Carlson then imitated a screeching cat, and added, "with all four paws out, all the hair standing up? Look, she is in feral mode." After co-host Mika Brzezinski said, "I don't know what to say," and guest co-host Mike Barnicle said, "Tucker Carlson, ladies and gentlemen," Carlson asserted, "And I say that as a compliment, I admire her tenacity. I do."
Don't worry, he says it as a compliment. Join us next time when Tucker Carlson compares McCain favorably to a 19-year-old beagle with bladder control problems.

Ohio homobigot lawmaker vies for Sally Kern's tiara
We need to create a Sally Kern Award for the most batsh*t homophobic comment of the month. Check out Jeff Wagner, a Republican who represents the 81st district in Ohio. He believes that same-sex committed relationships lead to mental and physical illness. When a constituent asked about H.B. 502, the “Equal Housing and Employment Act", that would cover LGBTs, this is what Wagner said via email (spelling and grammar intact):
“[T]his is a dangerous and misguided bill. The bill is not really about people being denied rights to basic needs, but it is about promoting acceptance of an immoral lifestyle. As much as some people would have us to believe otherwise, this country was founded on Christian principles. One of those long honored principles is the tradition of holy matrimony. One man and one woman joined together in a union that goes as far back as Adam and Eve. As our society has gotten further from that standard (not just homosexuality, but easy divorce, cheating on a spouse, etc.) we see a continued collapse of the basic building block of society the family unit. As that traditional family erodes, we see more sexually transmitted diseases, kids without parents, heartbroken people and I believe a host of mental and physical illnesses. . . . rest assured I can not support a bill in any way promotes or encourages the homosexual lifestyle.”
Take it away, Steve Ralls of P-FLAG:
Wagner’s rant is also a reminder, as one of our PFLAG supporters in Ohio pointed out, of just how much misinformation is out there when it comes to issues like this one, and legislation like H.B. 502.In fact, one wonders if Mr. Wagner has considered whether it might not be more damaging to “family values” to have a family member fired from their job, or denied a home for them and their loved ones, simply because of who they are, or who they love.
What do you think?
Cool panda picture on a hot day.
I'm extremely excited about the new changes afoot here at Pandagon. We've had a server change, a software change (Wordpress to Expression Engine, for those curious), and a complete redesign to bring the site looking both modern and with the retro flair that pretty much defines what's modern now. But that's just the beginning of the changes we're going to see during this summer. We're looking at the biggest changes we've faced in three years, and I for one think this is going to be a bigger, more badass Pandagon that lives up to the badassery of our animal of inspiration.
Please leave comments, complaints, criticisms, compliments and come-ons in the comments of this post.
Scotty on the emperor with no clothes
The Bush tell-all book extravaganza is under way, as Scotty McClellan,
ex-shill ex-press secretary for Dear Leader, says in his new book, among other things, that -- gasp -- Bush used propaganda/lied to gain public support for the Iraq invasion! (via Raw Story):
* Bush and his aides "confused the propaganda campaign with the high level of candor and honesty so fundamentally needed to build and then sustain public support during a time of war";* Some of McClellan's assertions before the White House press corps were, in retrospect, "badly misguided";
* Karl Rove and Lewis "Scooter" Libby "had at best misled" McClellan about their roles in the notorious CIA leak case, even as McClellan publicly defended them;
* The White House was in a "state of denial" during the first week after the Hurricane Katrina disaster;
* Bush was "steamed" about his top economic adviser telling The Wall Street Journal that a possible Iraq war could cost as much as $200 billion. "He shouldn't be talking about that," said Bush, according to McClellan.
As you can see, there's a fair amount of posterior covering on Scotty's part. He just wasn't in the loop. Ironically, Scotty thought the press was too easy on him and should have pushed for more answers. Well, we all know how that goes -- the MSM was so worried about losing access to WH sources that they rolled over and played dead most of the time. About the only time they showed any balls was when it was clear Rove was a big fat liar about the Plame case.
UPDATE: Love this...Karl Rove starts the McClellan smear campaign, saying that the quotes he read "sound like a left wing blogger," not the Scott McClellan he knows.

About Pandagon
The Name
The proper pronunciation of the site is PAN-duh-gahn.
The proper pronunciation is not, and shall never be, pan-DAH-gun, PAN-druh-gahn, pan-DRAH-gun or PEN-drah-gun. We thank you in advance for your compliance.
The History
Pandagon was originally founded on November 26, 2001 by Jesse Taylor as his personal website. Realizing a short eight months later that he spent most of his time commenting on Eschaton rather than writing anything he considered even remotely interesting, the site was reborn as a political website on July 26, 2002.
The matching dates are merely a coincidence, unless you think it's cool, in which case it was entirely intentional.
The site continued on a meteoric rise until Jesse realized that he needed a coblogger, someone to share the dizzying highs and fearsome lows of the roller coaster that was Pandagon. (By reading this, you agree to exempt Pandagon and all Pandagon-related industries from responsibility for injury, emotional or physical trauma, death and dismemberment.) That someone was Ezra Klein.
Unfortunately, in the vein of all great partnerships, the riches which inevitably flow from such a titanic pairing created the rift which eventually drove them apart. After a drug-fueled confrontation1, Ezra soon went to write for some alt weekly or whatever.
Nearly adrift, aimless through the blogging river of life, Jesse went on an extensive search2 for a new coblogger and found one in Mousewords' Amanda Marcotte. Eventually, the fact that Amanda was a feminist and therefore a man-hating succubus3 pushed Jesse away from the site and towards a campaign job.
That left Amanda as the editor of the site, and she brought in Pam Spaulding as a regular contributor. Since they're women, there are no drugs or fighting involved despite the site's success, just lots of handholding over cups of coffee and watching of Lifetime movies of the week under heavy afghans.
At least, that's how we assume things go.

About Jesse
Jesse Taylor is the founder and editor of Pandagon.net.
He served as then-Congressman Ted Strickland's (D, OH-6) Online Communications Director for his successful gubernatorial campaign against former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell from October 2005 until November 2006. He served in the same position on the Governor-Elect's transition team, and then became the Governor's Office's first-ever Online Communications Director. His duties included overseeing the standardization of all cabinet-level websites, a project whose progress you can follow at Redesign.Ohio.Gov. He also served as an internet consultant for Jerry Springer's political group, Make Ohio Blue, and radio show, Springer on the Radio as well as briefly serving as Communications Director for Ohio Young Democrats.
He is also a member of the University of Michigan Law School's Class of 2011, which, when combined with his attending Pennsylvania's Swarthmore College and having grown up in Ohio, makes him pretty sure that he's lived in more swing states than you.

Ex-gay "Christian" activist James Hartline on Pam:
"I have been mocked over and over again by ungodly and unprincipled anti-christian lesbians."
(from "Six Years In Sodom: From The Journal Of James Hartline," 9/4/2006, written from the "homosexual stronghold" of Hillcrest in San Diego).
Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth Against Homosexuality heartily endorses the Blend, calling Pam:
A "vicious anti-Christian lesbian activist."
