Calling Someone Hitler Is Calling Someone Hitler No Matter How You Frame It

As hard it may be for conservative leaders to accept, there are some situations you just can't lie your way out of. (See: Akin, Todd.) Sometimes there's a single, solitary interpretation of an event and no amount of dissembling, deflection, or outright bullshit will convince people otherwise. (See: Republicans trying to blame Obama for the shutdown.) Sure, the true believers will say they buy your excuses, but they're just trying to help a fellow wingnut out.

Jimmy Kimmel Opens Eyes For A Second, Sees Truth: Kanye West Was Right

Thanks to Soroush Khanlou on Twitter for reminding me that I have this elaborate theory about Kanye West being cursed by some ancient Greek god to be horribly misunderstood all the time.

Catholic Bishops Make It Official: Forced Childbirth Is More Important Than Feeding Babies

Remember Pope Francis said some pretty stuff about how Catholic authorities need to be less obsessed with their attempts to control human sexuality and more interested in helping the poor, and how a bunch of liberals who are grading the pope on a massive curve got excited? Remember how meanie atheists said that it doesn't matter and we can tell you right now that nothing will change? Well, I do like saying "I told you so," so let me tell it to you again.

For The Misogynist Trolls: Your Repulsive Personality Is Not Inevitable

Our recent troll infestation---which was conducted, as many are, by trolls who wait until a Friday night because they know that the moderators, unlike themselves, are probably offline socializing and maybe even having sex---was an unpleasant reminder that a lot of blame feminism because they can't get all the sex they think they deserve. The recent Facebook page threatening-by-pretending-not-to-threaten sex positive atheist blogger Miri Mogilevsky demonstrated a similar obsession. In particular, there was a weird obsession with Miri's sex life, the usual "jokes" about how a woman who is sex positive must be fucking everyone (but the person angrily freaking out about this, of course) and the suggestion that the penalty for being sexually liberated, for a woman, should be death. (The page appears to be down now, but there was, unfortunately, the initial tendency to take the side of angry dudes over feminists in the Facebook response at first.*) The sexual resentment of Miri is particularly noteworthy in this case. Since her online presence is optimistic and cheerful, even the most aggressive protests that it's about her personality are going to fall flat.

How To Use Republican Irrationality For Better Negotiations

I was really impressed by a recent piece by Greta Christina for Free Inquiry asking if there's a rational way to accept/use our own irrationality. Being irrational is simply a result of being human; many irrational thought processes are only really a problem when they're, well, a problem. (I realize that's a tautology. *cymbal crash*) All very interesting stuff about anticipating our irrational desires and making rational choices that make those desires work for us instead of against us, like enrolling in a gym in order to work out more.

OK Cupid About To Cause Surge In Entitled Whining From Self-Described Nice Guys

Oh, OK Cupid, why did you have to go and do a thing like this? The famous dating website is now going to offer a "premium" service where you can tell them to filter out people who have physical traits you feel that you find unattractive. Worse, they're allowing paying customers to put in filters that only show them the most "attractive" people, no doubt based on how long and often other people look at their profiles. You know, for the people who need others to tell them what's attractive, of which there are sadly plenty.

Republicans Trying To Gaslight The Public On The Shutdown

Republicans think you are stupid. If a terrorist group takes a hostage, rest assured that 99% of people will blame the terrorist group if the hostage is hurt or killed, and not the hostage's allies who were not in a position to give in to the outrageous demands of terrorists. But Republicans have convinced themselves that they can get the public to blame the Democrats for the government shutdown caused by Republicans taking the government hostage.

Who Are Walter White's Predecessors?

After seeing some debate about whether or not Walt was punished enough by the end of Breaking Bad, and so I thought I'd throw out a few predecessors from literature, to at least clarify what kind of story that Vince Gilligan was telling. I believe, in the end, that it was a "be careful what you wish for, because you might just get it" story, a myth that tends to echo through many cultures and ages. Here's some examples.

Breaking Bad Recap: S5E16, "Felina"

How did they do it? For five seasons, Walter White has become an increasingly despicable character, one who thinking members of the audience want to see fail and pay for his crimes. (Bad Fans, per Emily Nussbaum, excepted.) Sure, even the anti-Walt camp got caught up in things like the train heist or the laptop destruction, but more out of a curiosity of how they were going to pull this off, and not so much a desire to see our hero succeed. Was there any moment more satisfying than when Hank slapped the cuffs on Walt? No. So how did they do it? How did they turn Walt into an avenging angel of justice? How did we seamlessly slip into cheering him on as he actually achieved his major goals that he laid out for himself at the beginning of the series?

What Fresh Hell Will We See Tomorrow?

Yesterday was quite the day for the internet coughing up terrifying descriptions of how some people believe women should be in order to obtain the precious validation of a man. You had the woman whose boyfriend tasked her to make him 300 sandwiches---the universal misogynist food symbol for the supposed inferiority of women---in exchange for an engagement ring. Then there was the incredibly racist guy inadvertently besmirching the good name of Austin with his bizarre website full of incredibly exacting demands for a girlfriend. Though, to be fair, all of his demands fell into two categories: How to Look Perfect Because That's What I Deserve and How to Live As If You're A Man-Placating Robot Instead of A Person. He showed zero concern about whether any hypothetical girlfriend would have things like "tastes" or "personality". And then there was this depressing marriage guide from one of the Real Housewives that explains that in order to earn the right to have some asshole gently farting away as he shares your bed for the rest of your life---or until your tits fall and he trades you for a new model, but same thing, since women's value is only in pleasing men---you have to be a combination of a sex toy and house servant. Seriously, these quotes are mind-bending:

Ted Cruz, You're No Wendy Davis

Ted Cruz's pathetic non-filibuster caused me to realize something about the man: He's the pure embodiment of right wing resentment. Not just what most liberals think of when we consider right wing resentment---resentment of women and racial minorities gaining power, largely---but the more abstract right wing resentment that, while not as prominent as the racism/sexism, is still a major driving force in the culture wars: The resentment and envy of "cool". To be clear, this kind of resentment is everywhere in American culture---witness the relentless attacks and bile poured out over the fact that "hipsters" exist and seem to actually enjoy their lives, which is apparently high treason in the country---but this kind of grumpy resentment/envy finds its purest expression on the right. From Rush Limbaugh's endless obsession with the evils of the "24-year-old woman" to the desperate attempts to create a "conservative Woodstock" to the grinding, obsessive hatred of Lena Dunham to the pitiable attempts to create a rock-and-roll conservatism to the very phrase "South Park conservative" to Marco Rubio going on and on about how he loves a rapper that died right when kids in college today were in diapers, the message is clear: Conservatives know liberals are cooler, and they really, really resent that. No matter how much they clutch their DVDs of "Duck Dynasty" to their chests and insist that tasteless, sex-negative mediocrity is where it's at, they aren't convincing outsiders, and not really convincing themselves.
