NEWS: Lady Wears Clothes

The AP is taking the "let's judge a famous woman by her clothes" one step further by opening up a forum for readers to determine whether or not it's cool to discuss her outfit, which is a totally different and not at all offensive thing. I mean, as long as you make clear that you're aware that what you're saying might be considered retrograde and misogynistic, then you have full permission to say it.

Supreme Court justice hearings as political theater

Confession: I haven't had the stomach to flip on the TV and watch the Sotomayor hearings, because I have so little tolerance for the charade that there's no such as fundamental political differences that inform the process. Judges pretending they don't have opinions, Republican Senators pretending they have any intention of actually considering Sotomayor's qualifications and basing their votes on that, the fundamental bullshit underlying the process in general annoys me to no end. I've been following the online text-based coverage and the tweets from my tweeps with stronger stomachs than mine, but the urge to keep C-SPAN shut off all day has won out.

It was only a matter of time...teen falls into manhole while texting

It's bad enough that people seem disconnected from the outside world, jabbering and texting on their mobile phones while driving and many insist they can do both safely, here's proof how distracting these activities can be even when you're on your own two feet. (NYDN):

Reflections on a weekend spent with skeptics

I've been sort of out of the loop for three days, as I've been in Vegas immersed in the fascinating The Amazing Meeting, a conference dedicated to skepticism, rational thinking, and the advancement of science. So I got to hear all sorts of fascinating lectures on everything from the ethics of magicians to stopping the anti-vaccination movement. (Which is frighteningly big now---I saw at least 4 people walking around airports with Jenny McCarthy's book this weekend.) Now I'm back and have a lot of catch-up to do, but before that, I thought I'd share a couple observations.

This is so sad. Dr. King and Coretta Scott King are rolling in their graves over the way some of the members of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization the slain civil rights leader founded, are treating the Rev. Eric Lee, the president of the Los Angeles chapter of the org.

Weekender fun: new Dinosaur Trail preview at the Museum of Life and Science

Today Kate and I attended the sneak preview of the new Dinosaur Trail at the Museum of Life and Science in Durham. You might recall that I recently blogged about the last remaining dinosaur (R) on the late 1960s-era trail -- a "brontosaurus" -- was vandalized, its head decapitated and stolen. It was later recovered and there is a campaign to restore it up on Facebook, "Save Durham's Brontosaurus."

My Brain Is Bigger Than Your Brain, And I Have A Very Very Very Big Brain

imageSo, I have a problem. I think that Bridget Kevane actually is kind of a supercilious asshole, irrespective of gender, for her insistence that the only problem with leaving two 12-year-olds in a mall with three younger kids, and then the 12-year-olds dumping the younger kids off to go do something else is that people hate educated women.

Friday Genius Ten "Lights, Pings, And Dry Air" Edition

In Las Vegas for The Amazing Meeting. I've boned up a little on craps and can't wait to play again. I will say that one thing about Vegas that's kind of sad for me personally is the way that the whole point of Vegas is to stay inside all the time and never stick your head out the door. Since I grew up in the Chihuahua desert (Vegas is in the Mojave), going to the more arid parts of America fills me with a sense of homecoming, particularly mountainous areas like Las Vegas. I like to take a little in when I'm out west, but that doesn't come up much in Vegas. The reliance on unnecessary refrigerated air also makes me sad, like it's doubling down on the dryness. One thing I always liked about living in a desert was that you can use evaporative cooling, which is a lot easier on your skin and nose, and just feels less cold than refrigerated air. It took me years of living in Austin before I made my peace with refrigerated air.
