Pelosi responds to Bachmann's DOMA comments: 'Who cares?'
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) had a two-word response on Wednesday to Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-MN) assertion that the Supreme Court tried to "undo what a holy God has instituted" by striking down the federal same sex marriage ban: "Who cares?"
In a Capitol Hill press conference following the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California's Proposition 8, Pelosi declared that "justice was done for thousands of LGBT families nationwide."
"This ruling will only make us work harder in the courts, in the state legislatures, everywhere to ensure that all men and women in every part of our country are granted equal rights no matter who they love," the Minority Leader said.
Openly gay Congressman Mark Takano (D-CA) called on the state of California to begin issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples immediately.
"I feel jubilation, I feel fabulous, I feel every gay word I can think of," Takano laughed.
As one reporter noted, not every lawmaker was feeling jubilation over the high court's rulings.
In a statement, Bachmann had insisted that marriage was "created by the hand of God" and "not even a Supreme Court, can undo what a holy God has instituted."
"What the Court has done will undermine the best interest of children and the best interests of the United States," the tea party Republican said.
But Pelosi clearly wasn't interested in spending any energy responding to Bachmann's opinion.
"Who cares?" the California Democrat shrugged, shaking her head.
Takano, however, said that he had not given up on Bachmann.
"In the fullness of time, I firmly believe with every conviction of my heart that every American will come to celebrate this decision," he predicted. "This decision was not imposed on the American people. It really ratified what was already in the hearts and minds of the great majority of American people."
