Maddow blasts Romney for 'brazenly empirically false' ads
On her show Thursday night, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow tore into Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney for blatantly distorting comments made by the President.
"This is not typical political practice," she said. "There is a lot to debate here in terms of the substance. But there is also the question of what we expect of somebody who is running for president. There is a certain shamelessness threshold that we expect our candidates to meet. These ads should be taken down and corrected, but they are still up. And, yeah, attack ads have spin and nuances are often contested, but brazenly empirically false ads, one right after the other, that seems like something new."
In his latest ad, Romney's campaign makes it sound as though Obama doesn't believe people create their own businesses. In the ad, the owner of a New Hampshire metal fabricating company asks why the President is "demonizing" him.
During a recent speech, the President said: "Let me tell you something: If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen."
Romney's ad suggests Obama was referring to businesses when he said "you didn't build that." However, the President's full speech makes it clear that he was referring to American infrastructure -- roads and bridges.
Maddow noted that Romney had himself made a similar point, claiming businesses relied on public and private investments.
"They're all making the same point," she said. "But because it is Mitt Romney we are talking about, he is now also vehemently against that point that he has been making."
