DC shooting suspect worked with CIA-backed units in Afghanistan

The suspected gunman who shot two National Guard troops near the White House worked with CIA-backed military units during the U.S. war in his home country of Afghanistan, according to the agency.

Sources familiar with the investigation identified the suspect as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe said he came to the U.S. in September 2021 through a Biden-era immigration program for Afghans who had worked with the U.S. government, reported the New York Times.

'Ultimate betrayal': MAGA influencer melts down as GOP lawmaker helps refugees

MAGA influencer Laura Loomer melted down Friday over claims that a Republican lawmaker worked to help house Afghan refugees at a Texas military base after the Taliban took over the country in 2021.

Loomer was criticizing Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and his work with Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) to house 10,000 Afghan refugees in August 2021 at Fort Bliss in a post on X Friday, a week after an Afghan national allegedly shot two National Guard troops, killing one and leaving another severely injured.

This single ICE detainment shows the depth of Trump's disgrace

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainment of J.R. Tucker High School student Armand Momand constitutes a constitutional outrage.

Because of his father’s service to the U.S. government in Afghanistan, Momand has legal U.S. immigration status. Yet ICE agents took him into custody Aug. 8 after convictions in an Henrico County court for driving more than 20 miles an hour over the speed limit and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors.

MAGA factions slam Trump over $45M Taliban payments: 'We are crooked'

President Donald Trump's administration is being sharply criticized by conservatives in both government and media for reportedly sending tens of millions of dollars to the Taliban-controlled government in Afghanistan.

Newsweek reported Tuesday that, according to Amrullah Saleh, (who leads the anti-Taliban political party Afghanistan Green Trend) the Trump administration flew $45 million in cash to Afghanistan on Monday. Saleh's group alleged that the money was "flown in via a chartered flight by Moalem Airlines," which is based in Kyrgyzstan.

US Green Berets accuse Trump administration of 'reneging on promises made'

Members of the U.S. Green Berets Special Forces are pushing back against President Donald Trump's crackdown on Afghan immigrants after the recent shooting in Washington, D.C., with one chastising the move as "reneging on promises made" in a report from NBC News.

On Nov. 26, an Afghan national opened fire on National Guard members deployed to D.C. by Trump's order, killing one, Sarah Beckstrom, and critically injuring another, Andrew Wolfe. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was later found to have received CIA paramilitary training in Afghanistan and served in a CIA-backed militia. He first entered the U.S. after the withdrawal of military forces from his home country in 2021. Reports also indicate that he had been suffering from mental health issues in recent months and was struggling financially.

Afghan Community in US ‘terrified’ as Trump 'exploits' DC Shooting

Advocates for refugees in the United States continued to raise alarm Friday after President Donald Trump moved quickly to exploit the murder of one National Guard soldier and the wounding of another—allegedly shot by a national from Afghanistan who worked for the US military and CIA during the war there before seeking asylum in the US—by issuing a sweeping ban against asylum-seekers and halting all immigration from what he termed “all Third World countries” in response to Wednesday’s shooting in Washington, DC.

“Regardless of the alleged perpetrator’s nationality, religion or specific legal status,” said Matthew Soerens, a vice president with the faith-based World Relief, speaking with the Associated Press, “we urge our country to recognize these evil actions as those of one person, not to unfairly judge others who happen to share those same characteristics.”
