JD Vance breaks late-night tie to claw back billions in funding after GOP revolt

JD Vance was forced to cast a late-night tie-breaking vote in the Senate on Tuesday after multiple GOP Senators refused to back a Trump-backed bill, according to a new report.

The bill, also known as the rescissions package, includes funding cut requests for 22 items that lawmakers previously approved. It seeks to claw back more than $9 billion in funding meant for programs ranging from public media to foreign aid. A majority of the cuts are to foreign aid programs like PEPFAR, which prevents HIV and AIDS.

'I've got concerns': Another GOP senator balks at Trump's new cuts

Hours after reports that Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) was against advancing President Donald Trump's "rescissions" bill to defund foreign aid and public broadcasting, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) followed suit.

“I've got concerns about the details that we have not been able to fully receive," said Murkowski, reported NBC News' Frank Thorp on Tuesday evening. "But more important than all of that, more important is our role here. I don't want us to go from one reconciliation bill to a rescissions package to another rescissions package to a reconciliation package to a continuing resolution.”

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he has the votes to advance the controversial Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for U.S. Stablecoins, also known as the GENIUS Act.

The bill seeks to create a legal framework for stablecoins, or digital assets whose value is tied to a physical asset like fiat currency or gold. It has support from the crypto industry, which considers the bill an important step toward mainstreaming digital assets. However, Republicans failed on Tuesday to adopt a procedural motion needed to pass the bill.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are pushing to block action that would protect farms from toxic "forever chemicals" found in fertilizers made from sewage sludge.

The provision, introduced as part of a government spending bill unveiled Monday, would bar the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from enforcing the findings from a January risk assessment, which found that the sludge contains dangerous amounts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Senate urged to reject GOP's bid to 'decimate' public media and 'lifesaving' aid

Progressives and public health advocates on Tuesday were among those urging U.S. senators to vote against Republican legislation that would let President Donald Trump claw back billions of dollars already appropriated by Congress, even as GOP lawmakers ditched plans to cut funding for an HIV-AIDS prevention program that has saved tens of millions of lives in Africa.

Politico reported that Senate Republicans will remove $400 million in funding cuts to the President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), an initiative of former President George W. Bush credited with saving more than 25 million lives in Africa since its implementation in 2003.

‘Immediate disaster’ looms if Trump makes good on illegal threat: Editorial

The Washington Post editorial board slammed President Donald Trump on Tuesday for his escalating attacks against Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell — whom he originally appointed — for not following his demands to lower interest rates as inflation begins to tick back up again.

"For months, Trump has demanded that the Fed lower interest rates, with no success," wrote the board. "Now, the administration’s attacks on Chair Jerome H. Powell are escalating: White House budget adviser Russell Vought blasted Powell on social media for 'grossly' mismanaging the Fed, and Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William J. Pulte accused him of lying under oath during recent congressional testimony. And on Monday, Trump called Powell 'a knucklehead' and a 'stupid guy' who is costing the United States a significant amount of money."
