President Donald Trump said he fired Lisa Cook, a Federal Reserve governor, amid allegations that she committed mortgage fraud before joining the Fed.

Trump took to his Truth Social platform Monday night to share his letter, which cited his Article II powers in the Constitution and the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 to inform Cook she was "hereby removed." Trump said the firing was "effective immediately."

During a rambling press conference where he jumped from boasting about a World Cup trophy gifted to him to making personal attacks on Democratic governors, Donald Trump once again hinted at a U.S. dictatorship.

With the major players in his Cabinet standing at attention behind him, the president launched into what one critic on MSNBC dismissively called a “tsunami of lies” about what is happening in Washington, D.C., since he militarized the city with at armed patrolling National Guard troops.

The Department of Homeland Security admitted to what experts called a “violation” of federal law when pressed by a watchdog organization in late July, according to reporting from The New York Times Friday.

American Oversight, a nonprofit watchdog group, filed a public records request with DHS related to the deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles in June. In a letter received by the organization on July 23, however, the agency said it “no longer maintained” records – specifically text messages from DHS officials and staff – as of April 9.
