Candidates scramble to win House seat held by retired Speaker Kevin McCarthy

Eleven candidates are on the March 5 primary ballot in California’s 20th Congressional District, previously held by retired Rep. Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, left Congress in December after being ousted as Speaker of the House of Representatives in October. In addition to the March 5 primary for a full two-year term to start in Jan. 2025, there is a separate election with a March 19 primary to finish the remainder of McCarthy’s term. Some of the same candidates are running in both, but this page focuses just on candidates for the March 5 primary. California’s 20th, a solidly-red di......

NASA and Boeing chase jet contrails with science of climate impact in doubt

Scientific debate is getting heated over what to do about airplane contrails — the wispy lines of water vapor you often see trailing behind a jet. Those harmless-looking vapor trails sometimes spread out to form thin cirrus clouds. Environmental activists and nonprofits focused on climate change routinely assert contrails contribute more to global warming than the carbon dioxide emitted from jet engines. The aviation industry, under pressure to do something, has stepped up research into contrails. In October, Boeing and NASA conducted flight tests out of Everett with a NASA DC-8 research plane......

3 University of Kansas professors are accused of faking Native American ancestry. But it’s complicated

University of Kansas associate professorKent Blansett’s contributions to the Native American community aren’t in question. He founded theAmerican Indian Digital History Project, which works to preserve and promote indigenous history using digital media. His biography of Richard Oaks, a leader in the Red Power movement for Native American self-determination, drew critical acclaim. He was recently appointed to the board of directors for Humanities Kansas by Gov. Laura Kelly’s office. What is being questioned, though, is his own claim to a Native American ancestry. Blansett was hired in 2020 thro......

A national forest site is now named after a Black paratrooper who died in a secret mission

PHILADELPHIA -- On the day that the United States stunned the world by dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, a young Black man from the Main Line area of Philadelphia died in obscurity in a remote Oregon forest, the end of a brief military career that became enmeshed in some of the most significant currents of U.S. and world history. The story of paratrooper Malvin L. Brown was a saga of racial prejudice, secrecy, a cosmic discovery in the annals of atmospheric science, tragedy, and, ultimately, a 70-year mystery. Brown has just received a high honor posthumously: The government officially has......

Depression forms, forecast to turn into Hurricane Hermine. South Florida in the cone

MIAMI — A tropical depression formed Friday morning in the hot waters of the Caribbean, a system that the National Hurricane Center expects to significantly strengthen and make landfall somewhere in Florida around Wednesday — potentially as a Category 2 hurricane. Exactly where is the big question and concern, with nearly the entire peninsula potentially at risk. The first cone of concern is pointed near Fort Myers, but forecasters caution that the initial track could change. The National Hurricane Center forecasts tropical depression nine to strengthen into a tropical storm sometime Friday. I......

National Hurricane Center begins daily grind of tropical outlooks

ORLANDO, Fla. — The tropics may be quiet, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are listening.
