Route 66, America’s ‘Mother Road,’ readies for its centennial

From its earliest days, Route 66 has reflected the American culture of the moment. When the road connected Chicago to Los Angeles in 1926, it represented the possibility of the automobile. In the 1930s, it served as an east-to-west escape route from the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. By the 1950s, the 2,400-mile highway lured travelers with the post-World War II promise of adventure on the open road. And as the era of interstate highway driving dawned, Route 66 began to reflect a yearning for a time when a journey was about more than the destination. Now the eight states traversed by A......

E-bikes are an environmental dream — except out in nature

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The boom in electric-powered bicycling is reducing car travel, lowering carbon emissions and introducing homebodies to exercise and the great outdoors. But the activity is on a collision course with an equally cherished environmental ideal: peace and quiet. In response to a new state policy that allows e-bikes anywhere that standard bikes are permitted, local officials are racing to ban their use on unpaved routes in open space preserves. On Monday, the city of Palo Alto voted 5-2 to prohibit them from the popular Baylands Trail, beloved for its sweeping views of the South ......

Migrants bound for NYC spent 5 days on buses while stuck in winter storm: ‘They were in disarray’

NEW YORK — Dozens of Latin American migrants — including children and a pregnant woman — spent five days on buses in order to get to New York City from Texas after Winter Storm Elliott upended their itinerary, volunteers who greeted the wary travelers told the Daily News. The roughly 50 migrants arrived at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan on Christmas Day after leaving by bus from the Texas border city of El Paso on Dec. 20, said Power Malu, the founder of a group called Artists, Athletes, Activists. “It was the longest ride that anyone has experienced since the buses started arriv......

Flight cancellations continue in US; Southwest drops more than half its scheduled trips

The holiday hangover is particularly bad for U.S. air carriers as severe weather disruptions have continued to lead to thousands of flights being canceled around the country. By Monday afternoon, nearly 3,000 flights into and out of the U.S. had already been canceled and almost 5,000 had been delayed. Southwest Airlines accounted for more than 2,300 of those cancellations — over half of its scheduled trips for the day, according to FlightAware. Social media posts from some of the country’s major airports, including San Francisco International Airport and Denver International Airport, show incr......

Holiday travel is almost back to prepandemic levels: What to know to avoid delays

PHILADELPHIA — Get ready for traffic, travel and flight delays this holiday season as millions plan to travel. AAA estimates close to 113 million people will travel 50 miles or more, nationally, from their home from Dec. 23 and Jan. 2, which is a 3% increase from last year. This is the closest holiday travel has neared to prepandemic levels since 2019, when almost 120 million traveled for the holiday. The annual AAA report outlines the need for travelers to plan early, travel early and expect significant delays during the journey — whether it be by land, air or mass transit. Here are some of t......

Gabby Petito’s family awarded $3 million to settle wrongful death lawsuit against Brian Laundrie’s estate

A Florida judge on Thursday ordered the estate of Brian Laundrie to pay $3 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit from the family of his fiancee, Gabby Petito, whom officials say Laundrie admitted to killing. A trial scheduled for December will no longer take place after Sarasota County Circuit Judge Hunter Carroll signed off on the settlement. “The Petito family lost their daughter and they were also denied the opportunity to confront her killer,” said Patrick Reilly, an attorney for the family. “No amount of money is sufficient to compensate the Petito family for the loss of their daught......
