Ohio vote tests abortion question one year ahead of 2024 race

Columbus (AFP) - The US state of Ohio will decide whether to guarantee the right to abortion in a potential 2024 bellwether Tuesday as both sides of the American political machine establish their campaign strategies on this crucial issue one year out from the presidential election.  Voters will choose whether to amend the midwestern state's constitution to promise the freedom to "make and carry out one's own reproductive decisions, including... abortion," or to leave the document unchanged, allowing for a potential state ban. US judge in abortion pill case a former conservative activist

Washington (AFP) - Until 2019, Matthew Kacsmaryk was a lawyer representing a Christian organization aligned with the religious right. Now a US federal judge, he is set to decide the future of abortion pills across the country. The 45-year-old Kacsmaryk has been in the spotlight ever since a coalition of anti-abortion activists sued the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), seeking to overturn the federal agency's approval of mifepristone over 20 years ago. By filing the suit in Amarillo, Texas, plaintiffs were certain to have Kacsmaryk oversee the case, as he is the only sitting federal judge......

Scott Van Neste, a pastor, sharply opposes the procedure. Surrounded by his eight children, Van Neste has begun attending demonstrations to protect the state's anti-abortion law. Surprisingly, the two have something in common: They are new to the activist sphere. Newfound......

Abortion access threatened in half of US states

Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court's overturning of America's constitutional right to abortion gives all 50 states the freedom to ban the procedure, with nearly half expected to do so in some form. Automatic bansThirteen states, mostly in the conservative and religious south of the country, have in recent years adopted so-called "trigger" laws to come into force virtually automatically after the decision was handed down. And as of Friday evening, at least seven states had banned the procedure: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.  Other states, suc......
