Trump 'miscalculated badly' as BBC nightmare threatens to expose his kids: analysis

Trump 'miscalculated badly' as BBC nightmare threatens to expose his kids: analysis

President Donald Trump's own words could come back to haunt him — and his children and son-in-law.

Salon's Sophia Tesfaye discussed how the president's BBC lawsuit could reveal more information about his statements on Jan. 6, 2021, and his family's connection to the events that day. It's tied to the question around Trump's statement and what he meant when he told a crowd "fight like hell" before a group of insurrectionists attacked the U.S. Capitol.

But Trump might not have realized his previous legal strategy would backfire, Tesfaye argued....

Staggering lawsuit backfires as judge threatens to expose Trump's finances: report

One of President Donald Trump's own lawsuits is forcing him to expose his finances, according to new reporting.

A federal magistrate judge in Florida ruled on Tuesday that Trump has to turn over detailed financial information to the BBC, according to reporting by Politico. Trump is suing the BBC for defamation because of how a documentary framed his January 6 speech.

After a three-hour hearing, U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett found that Trump's financial information was fair game for the BBC to explore because his lawsuit put his businesses' reputation at issue. The ruling opened the door for the BBC to look at the financial information of more than 400 companies owned by a Trump family trust, Politico reported. ...

Unsuspecting Trump family member in jeopardy after president's missteps: legal expert

President Donald Trump's miscalculations of an opponent are now dragging an unsuspecting family member into a lawsuit, per a legal expert.

During an episode of the Legal AF podcast, Michael Popok explained that the BBC offered an apology to Trump as a way to resolve a $10 billion defamation lawsuit. After Trump refused, the BBC sent out dozens of subpoenas, with one possibly reaching his youngest son, Barron Trump.

"Attention, Barron Trump, you may be coming in to testify in a court of law," Popok said. "Donald Trump is not only a loser but a frequent miscalculator of the conduct of people on the other side. You can sue who you want, but you can't dictate how they're going to defend the case."...

Trump $10 billion suit backfires as judge forces surrender of 'all' financial records

President Donald Trump's $10 billion BBC defamation suit backfired Tuesday when a federal judge used Trump's own damage claims to force the surrender of his financial records.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett made the ruling in Miami federal court following a three-hour hearing.

Trump filed the suit in December 2025, accusing the BBC of deceptively editing his Jan. 6, 2021, speech to make it sound as though he called for violence, according to CNBC....

Trump's $10B BBC lawsuit is about to backfire spectacularly: legal analysts

Trump's $10B BBC lawsuit is about to backfire spectacularly: legal analysts

President Donald Trump's lawsuit against the BBC is about to implode, legal experts reported on Tuesday.

National trial lawyer and strategist Michael Popok, the host of the "Legal AF" podcast, discussed with legal analyst and MeidasTouch co-founder Ben Meiselas how Trump's attempts to sue the BBC for $10 billion — after he accused the broadcaster of deceptively editing a documentary about his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot — were likely to come back to haunt him.

"Donald Trump's litigation strategy seems to be blowing up in his face," Popok said. "The BBC and their defamation defense want to take the testimony and obtain documents from 47 different entities because they tell a federal judge that they've got to prove that Donald Trump actually did foment an insurrection and led an insurrection. See, Donald Trump couldn't leave well enough alone. The law of unintended consequences — obviously not something taught at Penn when Trump attended there — because look at all these unintended consequences."...

Trump suspected of ulterior motives in $1B fight with BBC: 'He doesn't care if he wins'

Trump suspected of ulterior motives in $1B fight with BBC: 'He doesn't care if he wins'

Donald Trump "doesn't care" whether his lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Company is successful, according to the Freedom of the Press Foundation advocacy director.

The president leveled a $1 billion libel lawsuit at the BBC, warning damages could reach a staggering $5 billion after a documentary aired with two quotes from Trump spliced together. Trump previously claimed the BBC made "false, defamatory, disparaging and inflammatory statements" in a documentary published before the November 2024 presidential election.

Two quotes from Trump during a rambling, hour-long speech were placed next to one another in the documentary. Trump had told those at the rally, "We’re going to walk down [to the Capitol] and I’ll be there with you." An hour later, he said, "And we fight. We fight like hell. And if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore."...
