AT&T seeks to shut down landline service for most of the Bay Area, much of California

A proposal by telecommunications giant AT&T to withdraw landline service from most of the Bay Area has sparked widespread fear among residents, many of whom live where cell service is spotty, power outages are frequent and losing connectivity is “very scary.” Oakland senior Carla Vinciguerra lives in a three-story home with a landline on each floor. If she suffered a medical emergency, and her cell phone were on a different floor, she could possibly crawl to a landline, she said, but without that option, she would have no way to summon help. “I just had to call the ambulance last September bec......

Elizabeth Holmes celebrates 40th birthday with her kids in prison yard

Even though Elizabeth Holmes is just nine months into a projected nine years in federal prison, she appeared to have a happy 40th birthday on Saturday when her family paid her a visit and she got some playtime in the prison yard with her two young children. The Daily Mail published photos of a smiling Holmes, running around the grassy yard with her toddler son, 2, and possibly playing a game of hide and seek around a tree. In other photos, Holmes was seen being held affectionately by her husband, Billy Evans, who also brought their daughter, who is about to turn 1, for the visit at the minimum......

Michigan GOP faces 'imminent default' on credit line, ex-budget committee member says

LANSING— The Michigan Republican Party is considering how to deal with "imminent default" on its line of credit, according to a resignation letter from a member of the state GOP's budget committee. The message, obtained Thursday by The Detroit News, reveals the seriousness of the financial struggles of a party in a battleground state, a year before the 2024 presidential election. Kristina Karamo, the Michigan GOP's chairwoman, has struggled to raise money after rising to power in February while railing against the party's "establishment," including past donors. Jessica Barefield of Livingston ......

How five borrowers are preparing for their student loan payments to restart

Student loan payments resume this month, and millions of borrowers across the region are rearranging their budgets to make space for a monthly expense they haven’t had to think about in more than three years. Some who graduated during the pandemic will be making their first student loan payment. The restart comes after more than millions of Americans thought they would be seeing $10,000 or $20,000 of their debt wiped out under President Joe Biden’s plan, only to see the plan get struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. The rollout has been far from smooth, with reports of long wait times for bor......

Feds accuse eBay of illegally peddling poisons, emissions-control defeaters

The U.S. Department of Justice is accusing e-commerce giant eBay of illegally selling tens of thousands of banned and restricted pesticides, and allowing such sales to continue even after it was ordered to stop. In a lawsuit filed last week, prosecutors also claim eBay broke additional federal laws by selling devices used to bypass vehicle emissions controls, and thousands of items containing the deadly solvent methylene chloride, which is linked to increased risk for several types of cancer. “Some of these products cause motor vehicles to emit … massive amounts of air pollution,” the lawsuit ......

California considers permanent ban on watering grass at businesses, even in non-drought years

California’s most-recent drought is over. Reservoirs are full. Ski season lasted until July. But despite the wet winter, an effort is gaining momentum in the state capitol to add manicured green grass to the list of business trappings — like fax machines, pagers and typewriters — that have become obsolete in a changing world. During California’s three-year drought, state water regulators banned watering “ornamental turf” at corporate, industrial or government properties with potable water as a way to preserve supplies. That emergency regulation is set to expire next June. A new bill would make......
