Anheuser-Busch to sell craft beer brands to New York cannabis company, a sign of industry changes

ST. LOUIS — Anheuser-Busch said this week it would sell several craft beer brands to a marijuana company, a deal experts said hinted at larger troubles inside craft brewers and beer giants alike. The marijuana company, New York-based Tilray Brands, announced the deal on Monday, promising to reinvigorate the craft beer industry. "Tilray is fully committed to invest in and champion the future of the U.S. craft beer industry by fueling new innovation that excites and further accelerates the growth of its consumer base," Tilray CEO Irwin Simon said in a statement. After 127 years, craft beer pioneer Anchor Brewing shuts its doors

Iconic San Francisco beer maker Anchor Brewing Co. has shut down production, ending a 127-year run for what's considered to be America's first craft brewery. Known for its complex ales, Anchor Brewing is owned by Tokyo-based Sapporo Holdings — which also is the parent company of Escondido's Stone Brewing. The closure does not signal a change in Sapporo's strategy of making the U.S. a growth driver for its beer business, according to the company. "Anchor Brewing's plans to cease operations are unique to Anchor's business only," said Maria Stipp, chief executive of Stone Brewing. "Plans set fort......

Another case of HIV linked to vampire facial offered at New Mexico medical spa

Former clients of a medical spa in New Mexico have been urged to to get tested for blood-borne infections after another case of the human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV, was linked to a vampire facial treatment offered at the now-shuttered business. The VIP Beauty Salon and Spa in Albuquerque was forced to close its doors in September 2018 after at least two clients tested positive for HIV following the facials, in which a patient’s blood is drawn and then components of the blood — specifically the platelet-rich plasma — are injected back into the face using microneedles. In March, another for......

New CEO of failed Silicon Valley Bank was once fired from his Charlotte banking job

The new CEO of failed Silicon Valley Bank is a familiar name to many in Charlotte’s banking community — Tim Mayopoulos was fired as general counsel of Bank of America in 2008 in the midst of the financial crisis and escorted out of the office by an HR representative. The Silicon Valley Bank failure was the second-largest in U.S. history. The FDIC closed Silicon Valley Bank on March 10, started a new bank called Silicon Valley Bridge Bank, and named Mayopoulos as CEO on Monday. Silicon Valley Bank failed after numerous companies transferred their cash from the bank when it couldn’t raise more c......

Fugitive Crystal Cruises’ luxury ship on the lam expected to stay in Bahamas’ safe haven

MIAMI — A fugitive cruise ship that was supposed to return to Miami but detoured to the Bahamas is not likely to be arrested despite a warrant issued by a federal judge in South Florida. The U.S. Marshals Service said Tuesday that it can’t seize the Bahamas-flagged Crystal Cruises ship because it is going to stay in Bimini — outside U.S. jurisdiction — where the cruise liner’s parent company has both a resort and a marina. “We don’t expect that ship to leave Bahamian waters,” U.S. Marshals Service spokesman Rob Gonzalez told the Miami Herald on Tuesday. “We don’t expect it to come back” to Sou......
