Outside spending in the 2024 election cycle has surpassed $1 billion, outpacing prior election cycles, according to a new OpenSecrets analysis of federal campaign finance reports.

Super PACs and other outside groups that can raise and spend unlimited sums of money have poured about $1.1 billion into 2024 federal elections as of Aug. 15 — nearly twice what similar groups spent over the same period in the 2020 presidential election cycle when independent expenditures hit an all-time record. ...

Trump campaign hit with new warning about taking illegal donations

Trump campaign hit with new warning about taking illegal donations

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign received a 79-page inquiry from the Federal Election Commission this week about excessive contributions, which isn’t unusual for him — he’s received such warnings before.

But what’s notable are the numerous miniscule donations — as little as one cent — to the man who famously boasts about his wealth. Those donors still managed to exceed the federal limit of $3,300 per person to a candidate per election, federal regulators told the Trump campaign.

The FEC lists 48 people who went over the limit while giving to Donald J. Trump For President 2024, Inc. during January....

Marjorie Taylor Greene gets fresh scrutiny from regulators after election violation fine

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) is getting questions from the Federal Election Commission again — this time about a new political action committee she created after paying a fine for election law violations and closing down another PAC.

The new “MTG for Georgia Leadership Committee,” launched less than a month ago, received a letter this week from federal regulators flagging it for a frequently abused aspect of campaign law.

A tenet of law related to leadership PACs is that they can’t use the politician’s name. That’s to prevent confusion by donors about how their money will be spent....

Fox PAC gave big money to key Democrats in January

The political action committee for Fox Corporation, the parent company of conservative-boosting Fox News, gave $25,000 to Democratic candidates and causes in January alone, according to a Raw Story review of federal campaign records.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee received $15,000 from FOX PAC, and the New Democrat Coalition Action Fund received $5,000.

The campaign for Tom Suozzi (D-NY) — who last week won back his House seat vacated by embattled former Rep. George Santos (R-NY) — received $2,500 from the PAC. So did the campaign of Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), who’s running for re-election in one of the most contested Senate races in the nation....

GOP ex-lawmaker using old campaign cash to bankroll law school bearing his name

GOP ex-lawmaker using old campaign cash to bankroll law school bearing his name

When Lincoln Memorial University received a $5,000 contribution in October, it came from a familiar source — the old campaign committee account of former Rep. John J. "Jimmy" Duncan, a Republican who last served in Congress five years ago.

Over the past 19 years, Duncan has given more than $48,000 in leftover campaign donations to Lincoln Memorial University, a private school in Harrogate, Tenn.

That money has helped sustain Lincoln Memorial University and the law school that bears Duncan's name, the John J. Duncan Jr. School of Law. ...
