Critics mocked President Donald Trump's defense of rejecting Iran's ceasefire proposal, which he said would reopen a strait he claims to already control.

Trump made the remarks Saturday while speaking with reporters as he departed the White House, telling them he had turned down Tehran's latest offer because it would open the Strait of Hormuz right away.

"I'm rejecting their deal," Trump said. "They want to make a deal where they open the strait immediately...we're winning tremendously. We have total control of the Hormuz Strait...that deal would not be acceptable."...

Vice President JD Vance delivered a warning to Tehran on Friday night after the United States launched a series of air strikes.

The strikes came over a week after President Donald Trump signed a ceasefire deal meant to end the war. U.S. Central Command said its forces hit Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar stations. It called the strikes a response to an Iranian attack on a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

A veteran State Department negotiator predicted that as the Trump administration struggles to find an off-ramp out of the Iran war, a ground invasion seems more likely.

"The administration is frustrated," David Miller told CNN on Saturday, saying that Trump will likely try "to go back to Project Freedom with some variation," referring to the short-lived effort to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has a blockade.

The difference with a new attempt at Project Freedom would be "the deployment of ground troops on one of those key islands" that are part of Iran, like Larak Island, Miller said. Such an invasion "would surprise me," he added....

Trump described U.S. military strikes against Iran on Thursday as a "love tap," prompting scathing ridicule and skepticism that the attack didn't violate a delicate ceasefire.

"President Trump tells me in a phone call the retaliatory strikes against Iranian targets are just a 'love tap,'" ABC senior political correspondent Rachel Scott posted on X. "When I asked if it means the ceasefire is over, 'No, no, the ceasefire is going. It's in effect.'"

U.S. and Iranian naval forces briefly exchanged fire on Thursday. While Trump touted U.S. success in sinking Iranian ships like "a butterfly" in a Truth Social post, he downplayed the intensity to reporters to uphold the ceasefire deal. ...

Former Republican operative Rick Wilson suggested that President Donald Trump's ceasefire with Iran could lead to an even more dangerous situation.

Wilson, the co-founder of the anti-Trump group The Lincoln Project, described in his Substack on Wednesday how the current halt on military action could reveal what might come next after the president reversed course on his serious threats against Iran.

"Every TACO in Trump’s career has been followed by a larger escalation, because the reversal itself becomes a wound he has to cauterize," Wilson wrote. "The pause is never the end. The pause is the windup. And the windup on an Iran war, a war he chose, a war he cannot define victory in, a war where the adversary gets a vote and the adversary is furious, is going to arrive inside a man who has spent his whole life believing that the answer to any problem is to hit it harder than anyone expected."...
