JD Vance's defense of Trump's tone toward voters immediately blows up in his face

JD Vance's defense of Trump's tone toward voters immediately blows up in his face

Vice President JD Vance tried defending President Donald Trump's tone by describing it as in line with the working class, and it backfired.

The New York Times opinion columnist Ross Douthat asked Vance about the tone of Trump and the administration, saying that it "is not consistently a Christian tone. There is a tone of aggressive uncharity."

Vance responded that "tonal arguments are ways of, frankly, policing working-class ways of communication and covering them in elite preferences."...

Pastor wants to 'govern unbelievers' — and his billionaire buddy is buying up a whole town

A CEO whose company has purchased more than 30 properties in a small city in Washington state has drawn scrutiny over his ties to a pastor who has spoken about the importance of "governing unbelievers" and a national Christian nationalist movement.

Camden Spiller, co-owner and CEO of Maddox Industrial Transformer, controls a network of more than a dozen corporations that have bought properties throughout Battle Ground, a community of roughly 23,000 people located 30 miles north of Portland, reported Oregon Public Broadcasting. The acquisitions include a bakery, cigar shop, farmers market and a site under construction that will house a convention center and chapel for First Presbyterian Church.

"Really what is at stake is what defines America, for me,” said University of North Georgia Professor Matthew Boedy, who has written about Christian nationalism and its growing influence in Idaho. “Is it religious liberty? Is it economic liberty? Is it this idea that we could, as a democracy, work out our issues together?”...

MAGA Christians scolded by analyst as they follow Trump and his 'tragically warped' soul

MAGA Christians scolded by analyst as they follow Trump and his 'tragically warped' soul

MAGA Christians are getting scolded for their unwavering faith in President Donald Trump — whose "insatiable need for revenge" runs counter to the teachings of Jesus — and how his personality has "tragically warped his soul."

In a new analysis for The Atlantic from contributing writer Peter Wehner, a former George W. Bush speechwriter, the author outlines how MAGA's brand of Christianity has granted fundamentalists and evangelicals a common enemy, fueled by Trump.

"It’s no longer an interesting question as to why Trump is an almost perfect inversion of the moral teachings of Jesus; the answer can be traced to a damaged, disordered personality that has tragically warped his soul," Wehner writes. "What is an interesting question is why those who claim that the greatest desire of their life is to follow Jesus revere such a man and seem willing to follow him, instead, to the ends of the earth."...

'Fits a profile': Suspect's Christian ties spur fears of more assassinations

Since the fatal shooting of a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband in an act described by a federal prosecutor as a “political assassination,” scrutiny has turned to suspect Vance Boelter’s ties to independent charismatic Christianity, in particular a movement known as the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR).

Boelter is alleged to have posed as a police officer as he gunned down Democratic Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, in the early hours of June 14. In a separate shooting, he wounded state Sen. John A. Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette Hoffman. Investigators say Boelter visited two other lawmakers and had a list of 70 targets, including Democrats, civic leaders and abortion providers.

Boelter was described in a court filing supporting federal charges as embarking "on a planned campaign of stalking and violence, designed to inflict fear, injure, and kill members of the Minnesota state legislature and their families."...

Trump and God: Religion raises the stakes at Republican convention

MILWAUKEE — The religious fervor apparent from the very start of the Republican National Convention crescendoed to the point when a Donald Trump-impersonating pastor came on stage the first night.

“We are made in God's image, amen, and we won't shy away from speaking that simple truth ever,” said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Monday.

Next came Mark Robinson, lieutenant governor of North Carolina and candidate for North Carolina governor, who thanked his “Lord and savior Jesus Christ for giving us my life, health and strength.”...

After battling diseases in Haiti, this doctor is now fighting for his kidnapped son

He led Haiti’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic after cutting its death rate from waterborne cholera by more than 50%. Now, Dr. Jean William “Bill” Pape has become a victim of his country’s vicious cycle of gang violence and kidnappings. Dr. Pape’s son, Douglas, was abducted Nov. 28 near his coffee farm in the mountains of Belot, above Port-au-Prince, the country’s capital. Nearly two months after he and another man were abducted by four men at gunpoint, the 33-year-old agronomist remains captive. A video sent by his captors last month showed the young man being beaten and psychologically tor......
