Busted: 62 members of Congress caught breaking the law

At least 62 members of 118th Congress have violated a federal insider trading and conflicts-of-interest law, a Raw Story analysis of congressional financial disclosures reveals.

Most of these violations involve failures to properly disclose stock trades as required by the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act of 2012. Some involve not abiding by the transparency and personal financial disclosure requirements first outlined in the STOCK Act's post-Watergate predecessor, the Ethics in Government Act of 1978.

Fox PAC gave big money to key Democrats in January

Fox PAC gave big money to key Democrats in January

The political action committee for Fox Corporation, the parent company of conservative-boosting Fox News, gave $25,000 to Democratic candidates and causes in January alone, according to a Raw Story review of federal campaign records.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee received $15,000 from FOX PAC, and the New Democrat Coalition Action Fund received $5,000.

The campaign for Tom Suozzi (D-NY) — who last week won back his House seat vacated by embattled former Rep. George Santos (R-NY) — received $2,500 from the PAC. So did the campaign of Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), who’s running for re-election in one of the most contested Senate races in the nation....

Feds expand their quest to claw back crypto-bro cash from big-time politicians

A government agency best known for hunting down federal fugitives has become wildly successful at capturing another kind of target — money from political campaigns.

More than 150 political campaigns and committees — including well-known politicians such as House Speaker Emerita Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Republican presidential candidate Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) — have together surrendered to U.S. Marshals upward of $1.35 million in donations from executives of bankrupt cryptocurrency exchange FTX, according to a Raw Story analysis of Federal Election Commission data.

That’s a nearly 10-fold increase in FTX-related campaign contribution forfeitures since mid-May....

Fox News parent PAC boosts Democrats with big money: federal filing

Democratic candidates and committees have received nearly as much money as Republicans from the political action committee for Fox Corporation — parent company of Fox News, according to a mid-year report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Monday.

FOX PAC reported disbursing nearly $232,000 during the first half of 2023. Of that amount, about $112,000 went to Democratic Party interests, with Democratic candidates receiving $62,000 in donations and committees and PACs primarily supporting Democratic candidates receiving another $50,000, the records indicate.

Democratic candidates receiving funds from FOX PAC so far this year are:...

‘Aren’t we a little more grown up than that?’: Ex-lawmaker rips Congress for ‘dog ate my homework’ excuses

Members of Congress keep messing up — over and over and over again — in failing to abide by an 11-year-old financial disclosure and conflicts-of-interest law.

And the habitual lack of compliance with the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge (STOCK) Act — dozens of lawmakers have violated its disclosure provisions during the past three years, often offering tortured excuses — is eroding the public’s trust, one of the law’s original authors tells Raw Story.

“I mean, come on. ‘The dog ate my homework,’ aren’t we a little more grown up than that?” said former Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA). “If we're capable of voting on whether or not to raise or lower taxes or send people to war, I think we can report when we make an investment.”...
