The White House on Thursday fired back at a GOP leader who they accused of promoting a debt-limit default for political advantage.

A White House spokesperson issued a statement describing the efforts to play politics with potential economic catastrophe as “appalling and revealing.”

Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates issued the statement after Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel on Wednesday during an appearance on Fox News suggested that the debt ceiling debate “bodes very well” for the GOP....

Former Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri said Tuesday night that the United States will not default because both Republicans and Democrats will be trying to court swing voters ahead of the 2024 election.

Speaking on The 11th Hour with Stephanie Ruhle, McCaskill said she has been intimately involved in similar discussions in the past, and that she knows what's going on behind closed doors. The former senator, who has been critical of Trump in the past, explained that swing voters will cast blame on all in power if they don't reach consensus.

Financial journalist Michael Lewis appeared Monday on MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show to explain Europe's financial crisis and how it could effect the United States. He said that if Greece defaults on its debt and abandons the euro, countries across Europe may be forced to bail out their own banks -- which many countries cannot afford to do.

World oil prices slid on Monday, as tumbling global equities and fresh fears of a Greek default sparked concern over the energy demand outlook, with the market also hit by the strong dollar.
