'Off the charts': Democratic donors 'coming back in droves' after Biden steps aside

Democratic donors are reportedly "coming back in droves" after President Joe Biden decided to step aside from the 2024 presidential race.

On Sunday, CNN's Priscilla Alvarez said she was in contact with Democratic insiders just moments after Biden announced he would "stand down" from the race.

"What I am learning now is that I'm getting text messages from sources who say donors, big-dollar donors, are now abruptly, suddenly reaching out again to advisers to say they want to donate," Alvarez told CNN host Kaitlan Collins. "We had seen in recent weeks that some big-dollar donors were starting to hold back their checks over concerns and questions about President Joe Biden's candidacy."

"Now that this decision has been made by President Joe Biden not to seek reelection, I am hearing from sources who say that these big-dollar donors are coming back in droves now wanting to give money," she continued. "Multiple donors had also reached out to the vice president's team leading up to this decision, saying essentially that they were willing to support her if she were at the top of the ticket."

Alvarez called the development a "remarkable moment" from "the donors who up until this point were holding back that money just because there have been so many questions about [Biden's] viability as a candidate."

Separately, Kenneth Pennington reported that "Democratic fundraising is off the charts right now. Across the board."

Dem challenging Joe Biden for nomination drops out of race: report

President Joe Biden is probably smiling on Wednesday after one of his few challengers for the 2024 Democratic nomination reportedly dropped out of the race.

Self-help and spirituality author Marianne Williamson, who has been challenging Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, on Thursday reportedly notified her supporters that she was dropping out of the race.

Williamson, who denied similar reports after they surfaced last week, was polling in the single digits in the primaries against the president.

Ballot fraud claim results in new election as Democratic mayor's primary victory is tossed

A Connecticut superior court judge has thrown out the results of the Democratic mayoral primary in Bridgeport and ordered a new election, following allegations of fraud and a challenge to the results, reported CT Mirror on Wednesday.

Primary challenger Jim Gomes filed the complaint back in September after incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim won by 200 votes in a race that came down to just a few thousand mail-in ballots. Gomes had been leading prior to the counting of the ballots. The outcome raised red flags in particular because State Elections Enforcement officials previously recommended criminal indictment of three Ganim associates over the way they handled absentee ballots in his 2019 election bid.

Before being elected mayor in 2015, Ganim previously served in that same office from 1991 to 2003, but was jailed on federal corruption charges.

POLL: Should Trump be allowed to run for office?

The order for a new election, which directs city officials to set a timeline for a new primary with 10 days, is not necessarily the final say of the courts; attorneys for the city have signaled their intent to file an emergency appeal to the Supreme Court of Connecticut.

Further complicating things, Gomes is also currently running in the general election against Ganim as a third-party candidate, and that election will take place next week. If Gomes wins that general election, he has indicated he will withdraw the challenge against the Democratic primary, as he will simply become mayor in that case, rendering all of this moot.

If Ganim wins the mayoral general election, however, the new primary would go forward, and Ganim's general election victory would only be affirmed if he wins the new primary election; otherwise, a new general election would also have to be held.

Man gets more than 2 years in prison for threats to Democratic senator

A Montana man was sentenced to more than two years in prison for threatening to kill Democratic Sen. John Tester, the Associated Press reported.

Kevin Patrick Smith made the threats in voicemails to Tester's office because he was upset with Tester's policy decisions, court records say. He was sentenced to to 2-and-a-half years in federal prison.

The profane messages included threats to “rip your head off.” The caller said in the messages that he was making the threats "on purpose."

"The FBI contacted Smith on Feb. 1 and told him to stop threatening the senator. But 10 days later, the threatening calls resumed, and Smith was arrested Feb. 22, the documents show," the AP's report stated.

"The criminal complaint, which was later replaced by an indictment, said calls from Smith’s phone number to Tester’s office began in late 2022."
