Florida lawmakers push to ban social media for children under 16

Miami (AFP) - Florida moved Thursday towards enacting what would be one of the strictest bans on children's use of social media in the United States after the state Senate passed a bill to keep those under 16 off such platforms. The controversial bill seeks to protect children's mental health against the "addictive features" of such platforms, amid fears over online dangers including from sexual predators, cyber bullying and teen suicide.  The legislation, which was approved 23-14, will now go back to the state House. It has already passed there, with the House speaker championing the legislat......

Alec Baldwin pleads not guilty to 'Rust' killing

Los Angeles (AFP) - Alec Baldwin has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges over the death of a young woman who was fatally shot on the set of a budget Western, US court documents showed Wednesday. Baldwin, a producer and star of the film, was charged last month for his role in the 2021 death of Halyna Hutchins during the filming of period piece "Rust" in New Mexico. He was holding a Colt .45 when it discharged, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin has repeatedly denied responsibility, insisting he did not pull the trigger on the gun, which should not have been loaded......

River rescues and barbed wire: Just another day at the US-Mexico border

Eagle Pass (United States) (AFP) - The sun had barely risen above Eagle Pass, Texas, when the migrants wading across the Rio Grande from Mexico had a crisis on their hands. They had tied their belts together to create a makeshift rope to hold onto but it broke, and the river was sweeping away a mother and her one-year-old baby. Such harrowing scenes are a daily occurrence on the southern US border, where thousands are crossing each day in search of their own American dream despite the dangers to themselves, efforts by Texas authorities to keep them out and gridlock on the national level about ......

Migrants' perilous trip past buoys, razor wire to reach Texas

Eagle Pass (United States) (AFP) - With their two children on their shoulders, Wilfredo Riera and Nataly Barrionuevo wade into the Rio Grande from the Mexican shore, the water soon reaching their waists.  Avoiding the string of large orange buoys placed by Texas authorities to block their passage, they slog on towards the United States. From their starting point at Piedras Negras in Mexico's Coahuila state, they cross to Eagle Pass in south Texas, where that state's governor, Greg Abbott, has deployed the military in an effort to stem the migrant flow. It is 2:00 pm (1200 GMT) on a Friday, wit......

US southwest on high alert as Hurricane Hilary climbs Mexico coast

Cabo San Lucas (Mexico) (AFP) - States across the typically arid US southwest were racing Saturday to prepare for life-threatening flooding forecast as Hurricane Hilary approaches from Mexico, where damage and one death were reported. A Saturday night bulletin from the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Hilary's winds had significantly weakened but were still sustained at a hazardous 90 miles per hour (145 kilometers per hour) with higher gusts. On the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, that would put the storm at a Category 1, down from its Category 4 peak. The storm's center "will move clo......

New rules spur migrants to seek legal path to US

Matamoros (Mexico) (AFP) - With tough new asylum rules in place, many migrants on the US-Mexico border were seeking legal routes to enter the United States on Saturday, despite warnings of a chaotic surge in crossings. Gustavo Rodriguez, who fled Venezuela after deserting the military, was among those who saw official channels as offering the best chance of being allowed to stay on US soil. "I want to enter legally," he told AFP in Matamoros, one of several Mexican cities along the border where thousands of migrants fleeing poverty, crime or persecution are gathered. US President Joe Biden's r......
