‘Beyond astonishing’: Marion police chief kept restaurateur updated on raids in real time

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Former Marion Police Chief Gideon Cody spoke with the restaurant owner who accused the local newspaper of criminal activity for checking her driver’s license status shortly after he raided its newsroom in August, commiserating about the situation and saying the search yielded “good evidence.” Bodycam footage from Cody shows a phone call between the then-chief and Kari Newell, owner of two Marion establishments, the day officers searched the Marion County Record, the home of its publisher Eric Meyer and the home of city councilwoman Ruth Herbel. Newell had accused the newspa......

Mayor Adams admits contacting FDNY head about Turkish Consulate opening

NEW YORK — Mayor Adams admitted Tuesday that he reached out to the head of the FDNY in 2021 to resolve a building safety issue on behalf of the Turkish government — an episode that has caught the attention of federal authorities investigating the mayor’s campaign as part of a public corruption probe. As first revealed Sunday, the feds, who seized Adams’ cellphones and iPad last week in the probe, are scrutinizing the mayor for asking then-FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro in September 2021 to look into quickly dispensing with fire safety violations detected at Turkey’s Consulate in Manhattan, whi......

FBI probe into Adams’ campaign examining whether he helped fast-track opening of Turkish consulate in NYC

On the heels of winning the city’s 2021 Democratic mayoral primary, Eric Adams called up the head of the FDNY and urged him to clear the way for the Turkish government to open its gleaming new consulate in Manhattan despite safety concerns at the high-rise building, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to the Daily News on Monday. The source, who was not authorized to discuss the matter with the press and spoke on condition of anonymity, said Adams’ outreach to then-FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro in late summer 2021 is being scrutinized by federal investigators as part of a public corru......

Committee to Protect Journalists calls for investigation after newspaper raid

The Committee to Protect Journalists is calling for an investigation into the raid at the Marion County Record, the Kansas newspaper at the center of a sharply criticized police investigation. CPJ’s U.S. program coordinator Katherine Jacobsen said the search and seizure of items that unfolded at the newspaper’s office on Aug. 11 was a violation of state and federal laws that protect journalists. CPJ is an international nonprofit that promotes press freedom and works to defend journalists against repression across the globe. She said there needs to be a “thorough investigation” into why the Mar......

Warrant for Kansas newspaper raid withdrawn by prosecutor for ‘insufficient evidence’

The prosecutor in Marion County has withdrawn the search warrant executed at a small-town Kansas newspaper that police raided Friday, the paper’s lawyer said Wednesday, which the Kansas Bureau of Investigation soon confirmed. All electronic devices seized by police will be returned to the Marion County Record, said Bernie Rhodes, a Kansas City-based attorney for the Record who also represents The Star. “We have stopped the hemorrhaging,” Rhodes told The Star. “But it does nothing about taking care of the damage that has already occurred from the violation of the First Amendment in the first pl......

Ex-Florida QB Jalen Kitna reaches plea deal on child pornography allegations

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Former University of Florida backup quarterback Jalen Kitna will be charged with two counts of breach of peace stemming from his arrest for child pornography in late November 2022. Kitna reached a plea agreement Wednesday that drops five felony child pornography charges with the State Attorney’s Office for the Eighth Judicial Circuit in Alachua County. The two second-degree misdemeanors each carry a maximum sentence of 60 days in jail and $500 fine. Eighth Judicial Circuit Judge Susan Miller-Jones placed Kitna on six months probation for each count but did not levy a fine o......
