Sam Bankman-Fried, the fallen wunderkind of cryptocurrency

New York (AFP) - He was the face of cryptocurrency, and a young one at that -- a media darling seemingly destined to unite the sector. But the stunning rise of Sam Bankman-Fried and his FTX platform would be matched by an equally spectacular fall, after it was revealed that billions of dollars of clients' funds had been moved and spent without their consent. A federal jury in New York has convicted Bankman-Fried of leading the fraudulent scheme, for which 31-year-old former tycoon now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life behind bars. Before it all came crashing down, the nati......

Paramount announces sale of Simon & Schuster for $1.62 bn

New York (AFP) - Paramount Global said Monday it had reached an agreement to sell Simon & Schuster, a top US publisher, to private equity firm KKR for $1.62 billion. The proposed sale, if it goes through, will end a years' long effort to sell the prestigious publishing house, whose authors include Stephen King, Colleen Hoover and Bob Woodward.  "We are pleased to have reached an agreement on a transaction that delivers excellent value to Paramount shareholders while also positioning Simon & Schuster for its next phase of growth with KKR," Paramount Global president and CEO Bob Bakish said in a......

JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon plays key role in bank rescue, in echo of 2008

New York (AFP) - Consulted by policymakers and able to nudge his peers into action, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon played a key role in a bank rescue effort this week -- a situation sparking reminders of 2008. Following the swift collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank, there have been fears that regional lender First Republic Bank could be the next domino to fall -- despite moves by agencies like the Treasury Department and Federal Reserve to assure SVB and Signature's depositors. While First Republic is not yet out of the woods, it was given a lifeline on Thursday as 11 major US b......

In New York, previously convicted get first cannabis licenses

New York (AFP) - Naiomy Guerrero's brother was stopped by police often and was once convicted on drug charges when marijuana was illegal in New York. Now, she is setting up a legal cannabis business, a promising new market fraught with pitfalls. New York state is offering its first 150 licenses for the legal sale of cannabis to people -- and their relatives -- who have been convicted of offenses related to the drug, including selling. The policy, implemented by the state's Democratic leaders, seeks to compensate African-American and Hispanic communities whose members were disproportionately ar......

Twitter aims to diversify beyond advertising, but can it be done?

San Francisco (AFP) - Is it a pipe dream or possibility? Elon Musk wants to diversify Twitter's revenue stream beyond advertising, a feat none of the biggest social networks have yet pulled off. Something of a gold standard, social media ads can be fine-tuned and tailored to individual users on a mass scale, and have been particularly lucrative for Meta's Facebook and Instagram, as well as Google. "Facebook pretty much set the standard for having an ad model for social networks," said Jasmine Enberg, an analyst at Insider Intelligence. "But that doesn't necessarily have to be the way that soci......

Twitter stock falls after Musk abandons takeover plan

New York (AFP) - Twitter stock fell Monday after Tesla chief Elon Musk ditched a $44 billion deal to buy the social media giant. The platform stock dropped 5.46 percent on Wall Street, to $34.80 by around 7:05 am (11:05 GMT). It had lost 5.10 percent before the weekend. Musk on Friday pulled the plug on the deal, accusing the company of "misleading" statements about the number of fake accounts, according to a letter from his lawyers, a copy of which was filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Musk's effort to terminate the deal that he inked in April sets the stage for an epic court......
