'Guaranteed death': Another GOP senator comes out swinging against Trump's demands

Another GOP senator has said he won't give in to a looming demand by President Donald Trump in a defiant op-ed.

In a Thursday piece for The Wall Street Journal, Sen. John Curtis (R-UT) made it clear, "I won't change the filibuster," a position that he made the headline of his op-ed.

"Under no circumstance will I support any effort to end or alter the filibuster, as any party that does so wouldn't be guaranteed survival," Curtis wrote. "Their agenda would be guaranteed death come the next majority." ...

Senate GOP fed up it can't kill Trump's zombie bill: 'It's like Night of the Living Dead'

Republican senators have been frustrated they can't escape the SAVE America Act — even after multiple attempts to kill the legislation.

For months, the conservative voting bill has pitted GOP lawmakers in a battle over the legislation that would require voters to show photo ID in order to vote, and would change mail-in voting and require proof of citizenship to register to vote, according to a NOTUS report on Monday. The bill doesn't have the votes in the Senate to pass it.

"This has left members miffed — they want to finally turn the page, but are again faced with a zombie," NOTUS reported....

'Nuclear' scenario looms as 'cataclysmic' change to Senate rules mulled: report

Senate Majority Leader John Thune's (R-SD) resistance to eliminating the filibuster is eroding as prominent Republicans who once defended the 60-vote threshold reverse course, signaling deepening fractures within GOP ranks over the Senate's most consequential procedural rule.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), who warned in 2021 that scrapping the filibuster "would be bad for the Senate and bad for the country," reversed his position last month after the Republicans' voting bill stalled in the chamber, and Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), another former filibuster defender, now supports ending it.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly pressured Thune to eliminate the rule that currently allows Democrats to block much of his legislative agenda, reported the Washington Post....

GOP senator forced to eat his own words on curious flip-flop in awkward CNN segment

A GOP senator was forced to backtrack on comments he made regarding filibusters after he switched sides when it came to voting on the Iran war.

"When Republicans were in the minority, you described it and repeatedly defended it as vital and necessary to protect minority parties' rights," CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins told Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) during an appearance on her show on Thursday.

Scott had been complaining about how Democrats "only block all the votes" Republicans try to make. He blamed "this sixty-vote threshold, which I think we ought to get rid of."...

'He will blow them up': Fed-up Trump ready to go 'nuclear' on his own party

President Donald Trump has signaled a rampage is in store if Republican senators don't kill the filibuster — and he's "ready to go nuclear," according to a new Axios report Tuesday.

The president has indicated he will make life a "living hell" for GOP loyalists who don't follow his command and posted about it multiple times on his Truth Social platform. He appears to be frustrated with lawmakers and the shutdown. And it's starting to bother him.

"He will make their lives a living hell," a Trump adviser, whose name was not released, told Axios....

How Trump and Senate Republicans are circling the wagons to save Clarence Thomas

How Trump and Senate Republicans are circling the wagons to save Clarence Thomas

WASHINGTON — The cycle continues: Clarence Thomas has former President Donald Trump’s back, Trump has Senate Republicans in his back pocket and Senate Republicans, in turn, have Thomas’ back.

No matter how much financial dirt journalists and watchdog groups dig up on Thomas, and no matter how much Democrats single Thomas out for what they consider his shameful jurisprudence, his legend only continues to grow within conservative circles.

And those conservatives are striking back....
