Are apple cores poisonous or healthy? Debunking some myths

Are apple cores poisonous or healthy? Debunking some myths

It is up to you whether you eat the core of your apple - though some people choose not to, fearing it may be poisonous. That's only partly true, says Germany's Centre for Nutrition (BZfE). Apple cores, or more specifically the seeds, contain amygdalin, a cyanide-and-sugar based molecule which is converted into hydrogen cyanide - a highly poisonous substance - by the digestive system, the BZfE explains. But the substance is only released if you bite into the seeds, and only lethal if you eat very large quantities of them. However an adult would need to eat a staggering amount of crushed seeds t......
The tragic tale of a shrimp fried rice dinner disaster

The tragic tale of a shrimp fried rice dinner disaster

The heartbreaking tragedy of my Wednesday-night dinner began with a simple message from my wife: She was on her way to an appointment and was defrosting a package of shrimp. Great, I thought. I'll make shrimp fried rice. Everybody loves fried rice. And although I think I had only made it once or twice before in my life, it will undoubtedly be fast and easy to make. I even found a terrific-looking recipe called Easy Fried Rice. What could go wrong? I decided to double the recipe so I could get two or three meals out of it, and besides, I was working with a full pound of shrimp. I stopped off at......

Form of food we eat may have more impact than we think

Bill W. asks, “Is drinking many of our fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds in a smoothie as healthy and nutritious as eating them?” Surprisingly, even though the whole food we pop into the blender may have the same nutrients as the liquid smoothie, how those nutrients are absorbed can be affected by their form and structure. A 2019 paper published in the journal Food & Function describes how researchers tested the digestibility of three different forms of foods (solid, semisolid and liquid) that were identical in nutrient content. Then they measured how the varied forms of food affected appetit......

Italian cheesemaker dies after shelf collapse buries him under thousands of wheels of Grana Padano

A 74-year-old dairy farmer and cheesemaker near Bergamo, Italy, died when a shelf collapse sent thousands of 44-pound wheels of cheese cascading on top of him, authorities said. Giacomo Chiapparini was checking on wheels of parmesan-style Grana Padano around 9 p.m. Sunday when a 30-foot-high shelf gave way, local officials said. About 25,000 wheels of cheese were stored in the warehouse. Chiapparini and his 50-year-old son, Tiziano, had gone to check on the wheels after a machine that cleans off mold and rotates them sent an alarm signal, according to friend and neighbor Bortolo Ghislotti. It ......

Gunman shoots into NYC 7-Eleven after trying to steal candy: cops

A candy thief pulled out a gun and opened fire at a downtown Manhattan 7-Eleven early Sunday, police said. The sweet-toothed shooter walked into the store on Church St. near Park Place, about a block away from City Hall, at about 5 a.m., cops said. He tried to steal some candy, and when a worker tried to stop him, he pulled out a gun, police said. The worker fled into the store bathroom and locked the door, and as the crook was walking out, he turned around and fired a shot into the store, cops said. No one was injured by the bullet, police said. Cops were still looking for the shooter Sunday....

Hershey’s chocolate comes full circle on Pennsylvania dairy farm. The cows love it

PEACH BOTTOM, Pennsylvania — An unmistakable smell swirled in the dusty air during a recent, windy morning on a Lancaster County farm. Red Knob Farm, a dairy operation a few miles north of the Maryland state line, is home to more than 1,500 cows, so there was that odor to contend with, of course. Workers had recently uncovered a large swath of winter rye that had been pickling under plastic too, but there was something more subtle wafting around, beyond the barns. It was a brown powder, piled high inside a commodity shed. If you looked close enough, there were flecks of orange and yellow. It s......
