House passes funding bill to end shutdown as showdown over ICE gets 2-week Band-Aid

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a funding bill to reopen the government and temporarily fund U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The move signals the end of a four-day partial government shutdown, as Americans have expressed their anger over the Trump administration's aggressive immigration policies, CNN reported. It has apparently created "another funding cliff" in two weeks for the Department of Homeland Security.

President Donald Trump was expected to sign the bill and end the stalemate quickly. ...

'Dangerous precedent': Dems fear they just handed GOP a 'playbook' for how to beat them

Some congressional Democrats fear they've handed Republican lawmakers a "playbook" to pass future spending bills that will give President Donald Trump everything he wants for his agenda, reports a new article in Politico.

Their fears were solidified last week when 10 Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), voted to pass the funding bill crafted by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). Nearly all House Democrats voted against the stopgap measure, claiming it gave President Donald Trump and Elon Musk's DOGE "the leeway to continue slashing the federal government without oversight."

"Senate Democrats have already started discussing privately how to avoid getting rolled again," wrote Politico's Jordain Carney. "They bet this month that House Republicans would never be able to pass a stopgap funding bill without Democratic support, and Democrats hoped they could leverage that failure into a bipartisan deal. That assumption backfired when Speaker Mike Johnson called their bluff, sending the Senate a funding patch that passed the House with only one Republican opposing it."...

'Very much in disarray': Dem scrambles as CNN host asks if party is in turmoil

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) shifted the blame to Republicans Friday when CNN's Brianna Keilar claimed the Democratic Party seemed "very much in disarray" — and asked how they planned to fix the problem.

Major cracks in the Democratic Party appeared this week as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he planned to vote in favor of the GOP funding bill that pushes President Trump's agenda. The alternative, Schumer said — a government shutdown — was just what Trump and his cohort Elon Musk wanted to see happen.

"Our Dana Bash reporting that your colleague, Sen. Michael Bennett, was very upset in a private meeting this week. That he accused Democratic leadership in the Senate of having 'no strategy, no plan, and no message,'" Keilar said. "That was the quote on the spending bill. And then we just got word that Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic leader in the House, was asked, just moments ago, if he has confidence in Schumer, and his answer was to say, 'Next question.' I mean, what do you say to the appearance of this disarray?" ...

'Throw down!': Dem representative slams Chuck Schumer for showing 'weakness' to Trump

Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL), who voted against the continuing resolution to prevent a government shutdown, declared that Senate Democrats should put up a fight and not give in so easily to passing the bill.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (R-NY) was roundly criticized after announcing Thursday that he was bucking his party and voting yes on the CR. Schumer argued that voting for the measure would thwart Donald Trump and Elon Musk's ambitions of a government shutdown that would make it easier to get rid of federal workers.

Moskowitz told CNN's Wolf Blitzer Friday that he voted against the CR primarily because Republicans wouldn't include his amendment to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid from any future DOGE cuts. ...

'One-two GOP punch': Analyst sees Democrats embracing a 'gamble' that may backfire

Senate Democrats are facing a dilemma over whether to reach across the aisle to prevent a possible government shutdown or just allow it happen as a form of protest, according to a new report.

The House GOP passed a funding bill this week, which was seen as a victory for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), after he promised it would not touch Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.

"The House of Representatives set up the one-two GOP punch by passing a bill to freeze spending at current levels until the end of September — while adjusting where money is allocated to prioritize Trump’s priorities, such as border enforcement. The House then promptly left town, leaving the mess for the Senate to sort out," CNN reported....

'A lie!' Speaker slams Dems as he claims 'zero' plan to cut Social Security and Medicaid

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) slammed Democrats for "lying" about the House Republicans' funding bill that he claimed will pass the House on Tuesday.

In a press conference from Capitol Hill Tuesday morning, Johnson declared "we'll have the votes" to pass the funding bill and avert a government shutdown.

Johnson accused the Democrats of concocting a smear campaign against the GOP's continuing resolution. ...
