GOP governor issues stern threat over millions owed to innocent man jailed 45 years

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) is pressuring Richmond city officials to pay $5.8 million owed under a new law to a man who was wrongfully convicted of murder and imprisoned for 45 years.

"Richmond, the state’s capital city, has yet to compensate Marvin Leon Grimm Jr. for a miscarriage of justice that began with his 'coercive' interrogation by local police in 1975," The Washington Post reported. "His ordeal ended in 2024, when Grimm was finally cleared of the abduction, sexual assault and murder of a 3-year-old neighbor."

To get his point across, Youngkin threatened to withhold state funding unless Richmond Mayor Danny Avula compensated Grimm, who "endured the longest wrongful incarceration in Virginia history and the second longest nationwide," according to the Post....

'You're hired': Democratic governors implement initiatives to lure fired federal workers

Federal workers fired by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency may find their professional futures lay in blue states where Democratic governors are rolling out the welcome mat, NBC News reported.

"In light of the thousands of federal job cuts doled out by President Donald Trump and billionaire adviser Elon Musk via the Department of Government Efficiency, a growing number of governors, mostly Democrats, have begun trying to woo those employees to apply for state government jobs. Others have promoted private sector opportunities and other resources available for those who are newly in the job market," wrote reporter Adam Edelman.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) dubbed the effort the "You're Hired" initiative. Her office put together a job board of open New York state positions, NBC reported, and she announced in a video, "The federal government might say, ‘You’re fired,’ but here in New York, we say, ‘You’re hired.' We love federal workers. Whatever your skills, we value public service.”...

Democrats and Republicans keep colliding over contraception

Democrats and Republicans keep colliding over contraception

This story was originally published by The 19th, a nonprofit news organization.

Democratic efforts to protect contraception access — and Republican opposition — were thrust into the 2024 spotlight last week when Donald Trump told a Pittsburgh CBS affiliate that his GOP White House campaign was “looking at” restrictions on contraception, and that he ultimately expected “some states are going to have very different policies than others.”

Trump was correct — states are taking very different approaches to contraception access, depending on which party is in control. On the federal level, there is also a partisan divide, but Republicans in Congress lack the votes to restrict access, and Democrats lack the votes to protect it. ...

'A fantasy of manhood': Are frat boys the new Proud Boys?

Two weeks into the surge of pro-Palestine protests that swept college campuses across the United States, a new, heroic archetype captured the imagination of right-wing media influencers: throngs of casually attired “frat bros” who jeered and laughed at activists, and in one case, a solitary Black woman.

Fraternities — whose reputations have taken repeated hits for sexual assault, hazing deaths, drug dealing and alcohol abuse — are being lionized by prominent conservatives who celebrate them as a cultural counter-force to liberals whose anti-Israel protests and encampments have roiled dozens of American college campuses this spring.

'They disparage him privately': Virginia GOP governor shamed for endorsing Trump

Former President Donald Trump became the presumptive GOP nominee for president on Wednesday with the end of former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley's campaign. And this meant a number of Republicans who had tried to keep their distance from him are now moving to endorse.

One such politician was Gov. Glenn Youngkin of Virginia, who posted his endorsement on X.

"Voters in the Commonwealth and across the country have spoken loudly for President Donald J. Trump and I endorse him for President of the United States," said Youngkin's statement. "His record on border security, restoring American leadership around the world, reducing taxes and lowering the cost of living for all Americans stands in stark contrast to the open borders, failed leadership on the global stage, rampant inflation and higher costs of today. It's time to unite around strong leadership and policies that grow our great nation, not four more years of President Biden."...
