Body-cam video appears to contradict NYPD version of what led to migrants beating cops in Times Square

NEW YORK — Newly released body camera footage of the chaotic melee between NYPD officers and a group of asylum seekers appears to contradict some of the claims by law enforcement about what ignited the incident that sparked nationwide coverage of migrants attacking the cops in Times Square. At a press conference Thursday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said a “meticulous” multiagency review determined two officers were assaulted after they told a group of young men outside a Midtown shelter to disperse, and one refused. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the group was impeding......

DeSantis immigration law may worsen labor shortages in Florida as planting season begins

MIAMI — A new state immigration law could worsen labor shortages in South Florida’s agricultural industry, a sector that heavily relies on migrant labor and struggles to find domestic workers, according to growers, immigrant workers and farmworker advocates. María Vázquez, a Mexican nursery worker in Homestead, said that over the last year she has witnessed colleagues and community members leave South Miami-Dade County, a region that grows warm-weather plants, fruits, and vegetables that don’t grow in most of the rest of the country. “Many people here risk their lives crossing the desert to ge......

A month after new Florida immigration laws took effect, advocates report rising in fear, confusion

ORLANDO, Fla. — Before July 1, Marlyn Bonzil-Juste’s van carrying people back and forth to doctors’ appointments and Central Florida hospitals was an everyday occurrence through her company, Top Choice Medical Transport. Now, a month after new state immigration laws backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis went into effect, Bonzil-Juste said she is beginning to see its impact on the immigrant community she serves. Bonzil-Juste said her drivers, who are mainly Haitian and Hispanic to cater to the patients she typically transports, often hear immigrants say they are scared of going to the hospital. “We have ......

YEADON, Pa. — For two Thanksgivings now, Karen Serrano Roberts has been missing from her family’s dinner table in Yeadon. It’s beginning to look like this will be a second Christmas away from home, too. Karen Roberts, a Mexican national who has lived in the United States for most of her life, has been stranded in Mexico for the last 18 months, separated from her U.S. born husband and five children due to her immigration status. Born in Puebla, Mexico, in 1991, Roberts, 31, was brought to the States when she was 4 without legal documents, she said. For part of that trip, she said, “I was in the......

Honduran woman who claims ICE agent raped her under deportation threat may have had good reason to delay lawsuit, says federal appeals court

NEW YORK — An undocumented Honduran woman who says she was raped and psychologically tormented by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent — who forced her to have three abortions — may have had good reason for delaying a lawsuit in the matter, New York-based federal appeals judges said Tuesday. The woman, identified in the case as Jane Doe, won reinstatement of her lawsuit against ex-ICE agent Wilfredo Rodriguez, which a Connecticut federal judge tossed in March 2022 because it was filed outside the statute of limitations. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision sends the case back......

On Saturday, Florida hospitals start asking patients’ immigration status. Advocates call requirement ‘dangerous’

Starting Saturday, most Florida hospitals will start collecting data on patients’ immigration status, bucking advice from clinicians who warn this could deter sick people from seeking care. A new law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in May, SB 1718, requires hospitals that accept Medicaid to inquire about immigration status on patient admission forms. The hospitals are required to then de-identify this data and submit quarterly reports to the Agency for Healthcare Administration, which will calculate Florida’s annual cost of uncompensated care for people who live in the state illegally. Health care......
