Former Trump administration Homeland Security official Miles Taylor described how "dangerously close" President Donald Trump has come to invoking the Insurrection Act — and how he believes he will do it.

Taylor described in a Substack essay Friday that Trump has threatened to to bring U.S. troops to Minnesota after protests erupted in the wake of an ICE agent fatally shooting mother Renee Nicole Good and how that threat should be taken seriously. As federal forces ramp up operations in the state, Trump has said that he will "send in the military using one of his most extraordinary powers," threatening that he will make the move unless the state “stops the professional agitators and insurrectionists."

"Donald Trump’s desire to invoke one of the presidency’s most extraordinary, emergency powers is ten years in the making," Taylor wrote. "I believe he will do it. And I believe we have real options to fight back."...

Insiders say that the Trump administration has kicked off key drafts to prepare for invoking the Insurrection Act.

In an NBC News report on Wednesday, five people — including a senior administration official, two people close to the White House and two others aware of the conversations — the administration is apparently beginning to consider the next moves and "whether it makes sense to invoke the act."

"Administration officials have drafted legal defenses and various options for invoking the act," two of the people told the outlet....

Top White House aide Stephen Miller paved the way for President Donald Trump to invoke the Insurrection Act on Tuesday in a social media meltdown over video of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass saying the raids on undocumented migrants needed to stop.

In a video he shared on X, Mayor Bass asserted, "We need to stop the raids. This should not be happening in our city. It is not warranted and...the only thing it does is contribute to chaos. This was chaos that was started in Washington, D.C. On Thursday, the city was peaceful; on Friday it was not because of the intervention of the federal government."

That seemed to be enough ammunition for Miller to make his case for an "insurrection" that needed to be neutralized....

Donald Trump is assembling the building blocks for an "authoritarian regime" should he win the 2024 election, according to Politico's Jack Shafer.

Shafer warned readers Tuesday that Trump plans to invoke the Insurrection Act on the first day of his new administration, which would theoretically allow him to use the military to counter any opposing demonstrations.

Shafer argues Trump wants to be more than president, he wants to be "prosecutor, judge, jury and jailer, too."...
