Menstruation is murder. Have a cupcake.

Menstruation is murder. Have a cupcake.

Emily at Tiger Beatdown has an amusing post up about the way that right wingers are abusing cupcakes for evil instead of good, concluding that cupcakes are therefore evil. She suggests other baked goods---including cookies, cakes, and macaroons---are also tainted with evil.  I suggest brownies or my favorite, zucchini bread, as a liberal-friendly alternative. (And for the humorless wingnuts reading this site, I want you to know that the previous trashing of baked goods is a joke. I realize that wingnuts take very seriously the idea that some foods are "conservative" and some are "liberal", and that eating of arugula instead of Burger King will cause their testicles to shrivel up, but seriously, liberals aren't as interested. Sometimes a cupcake is just a cupcake. Really.) But what I thought was really interesting was the anti-choice cupcake fuckwittery:

Anti-vaxxers and anti-choicers: a match made in heaven

Anti-vaxxers and anti-choicers: a match made in heaven

It was really just a matter of time before the anti-choice movement embraced anti-vaccination nonsense. Anti-vaxxers hit on all sorts of anti-choice buttons: the loathing of people who know more than them, the suspicion of science and modernity, contamination fears, the obsession with allowing unnecessary human suffering because it's "natural", and of course the bundle of anxieties about motherhood and reproduction. And of course, the second a vaccine that prevents a common STD was invented, the melding was inevitable, because anti-choicers are big fans of cervical cancer and its ability to kill the bad girls. I realize that most anti-vaxxers really don't want the alliance, because anti-choicers are objectively pro-disease, and anti-vaxxers maintain that they're not, but alas, some marriages were meant to be.

How mainstream are "pro-life" extremists?

How mainstream are "pro-life" extremists?

I have a total backlog of links on health care, foreign policy, and Sotomayor's nomination, but honestly, I feel right now that I have to put much of my time to this domestic terrorism issue, so that Dr. Tiller's assassination doesn't just disappear in a mountain of news items, leaving people to forget about the ongoing threat that puts more health care workers and their patients in danger. With that in mind, I have to address the ass-covering that's going on with conservatives, Republicans, and their apologists on this issue, starting with James Kirchick of WSJ. He's pulling the "anti-abortion groups condemned the attack" bullshit, but this, while technically true, is a misleading statement. They offered mealy-mouthed reminders that murder is a sin and, more importantly, a crime, and then they said that Dr. Tiller had it coming. This was, over and over again, the line. Bill O'Reilly's excuse-making is a perfect example---he basically said the exact same things that "marginal" figure Randall Terry did. I won't put that horrible video up, but here's Keith Olbermann discussing it:

Promotion Schmomotion

Promotion Schmomotion

Yes, the point of promotional materials is to use the promotional materials during any activity which is related to the thing being promoted. Hell, you want to know why people still die of cancer? They haven't melded their Livestrong bracelets to their bodies. Sillies.

Jill Stanek's greatest hits

Jill Stanek's greatest hits

How much do I love Media Matters? They've been intensely following the "Obama supports infanticide" lie that's being promoted strongly by Sean Hannity, which is mostly promoted by certifiable wingnut and racist Jerome Corsi and by anti-choice/anti-woman/anti-sex waste of space Jill Stanek. And they've rolled up their sleeves and put together a greatest hits package of her favorite writing. Is Stanek a sweet lady who just wants to help babies? Or, as I suggest, a person whose mind is bent by misogyny? The latter, my friends, the latter.

Right wing smears and lies

Right wing smears and lies

Update: Jill Stanek admits that she's, um, "mistaken" about Obama's voting record. Perhaps it was driven home to her that the sane people she's trying to cater favor with don't believe for a moment that anyone is pro-infanticide, much less Barack Obama. I maintain that this could have been met at the pass by pointing out that anti-choicers like Stanek are disinterested in introducing legislation unless they're convinced that it's a way to undermine women's rights. Knowing this about them, the automatic vote on any legislation they offer should be "no". Anything suggested by Stanek should be treated like it was as toxic as legislation promoted by a white supremacist organization.
