Judge Engoron under investigation over 'very troubling' talk with lawyer about Trump case

The New York judge who ordered Donald Trump to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in a civil fraud case is now under investigation, according to a report.

Justice Arthur Engoron's decisions are under a microscope after a local attorney said he had a conversation with the jurist about issues related to the former president's recent legal matter.

"A high-profile New York real estate lawyer, whose law license was once suspended, said he approached the judge presiding over Donald Trump’s civil fraud case to offer unsolicited advice about a law at issue in the case," the report states.

Judge schedules a hearing to find out if Trump's bond sponsor is properly backed

Judge Arthur Engoron responded to a brief filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James asking for financial information that can confirm the company that insured Donald Trump's bond was solvent.

Donald Trump was found liable for damages of $454 million, which ballooned after interest. He then asked the court to reduce the bond amount to $175 million, and the court agreed. He then secured a bond sponsor from the Knight Speciality Insurance Company.

The filing said she, “Hereby takes exception to the sufficiency of the surety,” noting the Knight Specialty Insurance Company is trying to operate “without a certificate of qualification.” In New York, state regulators require surety firms to meet certain standards, guaranteeing they are “solvent, responsible and otherwise qualified to make policies or contracts of the kind required.”...

Judge Engoron kept a back-up plan to keep Trump from any 'funny business': ex-prosecutor

Donald Trump may be on an invisible leash.

The former president was recently hit with an order requiring him to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for fraud in New York state. But Justice Engoron "for now" stopped short of ordering the "corporate death penalty," which he previously signaled he would, instead simply limiting Trump's business activities for three years.

Tristan Snell, who prosecuted Trump University when he was an assistant attorney general in the office of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, appeared on MSNBC's Alex Witt Reports to discuss the issue....

N.Y. judge might set Trump up to commit yet another crime after fraud case: report

If Trump continues doing business in New York, he could be criminally prosecuted, according to a Newsweek report.

Syracuse University College of Law professor Gregory Germain told the outlet that former President Donald Trump would be committing a crime should the appeals court uphold Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron's September decision to prevent the ex-president's companies from continuing to do business in the empire state.

"Those determinations were stayed by the appellate division pending appeal. If they were to go into effect, it would be a crime for him or his entities to continue operating any businesses in New York without a business license," Germain said....

'Yikes': Expert says N.Y. judge 'not letting either side off the hook' in Trump fraud case

'Yikes': Expert says N.Y. judge 'not letting either side off the hook' in Trump fraud case

Donald Trump and N.Y. A.G. Letitia James were both given the same order on Tuesday, and it stood out to MSNBC legal analyst Lisa Rubin.

Trump has been awaiting the decision in the civil fraud case, in which he and his adult sons were accused of manipulating the figures for his real estate empire as a means to get better loans and superior taxation treatment. N.Y. A.G. Letitia James has sought $370 million in damages and the elimination of Trump's rights to business in the entire state.

Justice Engoron has now asked that the parties weigh in on the implications of a reported perjury in the case, from a former employee of the ex-president's organization. And Engoron means business, according to Rubin....

Trump associate's perjury caused Engoron to 'slam on the brakes' on fraud ruling: expert

The judge who holds the fate of Donald Trump's real estate empire in a stroke of his pen is likely stalling to deliver a verdict now that it was learned the Trump Organization's former finance chief Allen Weisselberg is negotiating a deal to plead guilty to perjury.

Former federal prosecutor Elie Honig appeared on CNN's "The Source" with Kaitlan Collins to explain how it's more than likely Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron requested more time to render a verdict in the $370 million civil fraud trial now that he and the world know that Weisselberg is hashing out a plea.

"If I'm in Judge Engoron's position here, and getting ready to issue a big verdict and ruling, and now I've heard this, and we've all heard it, that one of the key witnesses committed perjury in front of me — I slam on the brakes and say, 'I'm not going to rule until I know the specifics of this,'" he said. ...
