Huge fire erupts at Wild West-themed amusement park in Germany

A major fire broke out at a Wild West-themed amusement park in southern Germany, injuring two people and causing millions of euros worth of damage, police said. Several wooden buildings went up in flames on Main Street at the Pullman City amusement park in Eging am See, in Bavaria, police said on Sunday. The cause of the early morning fire was not immediately known. About 200 people, including around 180 overnight guests, were able to escape to safety. Pullman City, which fashions itself on the horseback-riding cowboys of the 19th-century American West, covers around 200,000 square metres in E......

Psychologist to parents: Allow your child time to be bored

"I don't know what to do!" Boredom can frustrate kids and set them whining. So should parents rush to the rescue? Absolutely not, says psychologist and author Rüdiger Maas, founding director of the Institute for Generation Research in Augsburg, Germany. The title of one of his books translates as "Happiness via Frustration: Why Boredom and Obstacles Make Our Children Strong." In an interview with dpa, Maas advises parents of bored kids to relax and take a wait-and-see approach. Why can boredom and frustration do kids good sometimes? Maas: Boredom is very important because it makes them creativ......

Oscars 2023: 10 women directors deserving attention

Shortly after the Golden Globes nominations were announced earlier this month, the advocacy group Women in Film took to social media, decrying the "shocking" omission of critically acclaimed female directors, citing Sarah Polley ("Women Talking"), Gina Prince-Bythewood ("The Woman King"), Chinonye Chukwu ("Till") and Maria Schrader ("She Said"). It might be more surprising that anyone is still taking anything the Hollywood Foreign Press Association does seriously these days after years of scandal and upheaval. But let's put that aside for now. The Women in Film List is fine but incomplete, ove......

Ex-first lady Michelle Obama reveals personal side in second memoir

From the very outset, Michelle Obama makes one thing clear in her second memoir, "The Light We Carry": She's a normal person just like her fans and readers. "I, too, lie in bed at night sometimes, wondering whether I'm good enough," the former US First Lady writes. "I personally have plenty of mornings when I flip on the bathroom light, take one look, and desperately want to flip it off again." Of course, Michelle Obama has achieved a number of goals - among others as as successful lawyer, mother of two girls, a best-selling author, and last but not least, living in the White House as the wife......

Amazon greenlights Ridley Scott's Blade Runner sequel series

Blade Runner looks set to return, after Amazon Studios announced that it's producing a sequel series - called "Blade Runner 2099" - for Prime Video. Ridley Scott, who directed the original 1982 "Blade Runner" movie, is on board as an executive producer, Amazon said on Thursday, as is Silka Louisa (Shining Girls), who also wrote the script. The sci-fi film is set in a dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, where original Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) has to fight insurgent synthetic humans also known as replicas. In the 2017, the Blade Runner universe returned to the screen with Denis Ville......

'She-Hulk' brings 'feminist undertones' to the Marvel world

It's easy to lose track of everything that's going on in the Marvel universe, with countless of superhero movies and shows out there that are often linked on several levels. Tatiana Maslany, who plays the lead in "She-Hulk: Attorney at law," knows the problem well, saying she was glad that Marvel producer Kevin Feige didn't probe her knowledge too much. "He, gratefully, didn't ask me to watch everything," Maslany told dpa in London, laughing. "I think he realizes that it's an enormous universe. I know that there're people who've watched chronologically from the start to the finish. I've not go......
