Backlash erupts after Trump says he ‘feels badly’ for Cornell rape suspects: ‘Disgusting’

President Donald Trump sparked swift backlash Friday after saying he “feels badly” for the suspects accused in the Cornell University rape case because New York Attorney General Letitia James is now overseeing the investigation.

“Letitia James is a corrupt person. She’s totally corrupt, and I can’t imagine it,” Trump told reporters outside the White House. “And I feel badly for whoever she’s looking at, because they won’t get a fair shake.”

James was appointed special prosecutor Thursday to investigate allegations that a former Cornell student was drugged and sexually assaulted by multiple fraternity members in 2024, according to media reports....

Florida Bar quietly walks back investigation claim against ousted ex-Trump lawyer

Florida's bar association on Friday said it “erroneously” announced that Lindsey Halligan was under an ethics probe, The Hill reported Friday.

Halligan was President Donald Trump's former attorney and appointed by him as interim U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia to bring criminal cases against his enemies, which was objected to by longtime prosecutors.

After leaving the U.S. attorney's office in January following a judge's ruling that she had not been lawfully appointed, her cases against Trump's adversaries — including former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James — were dismissed. Florida's bar association had reportedly sent a letter the previous month indicating that Halligan was under investigation....

Trump DOJ ally demoted in move to strip his powers: report

The Department of Justice has demoted Ed Martin, a close ally to President Donald Trump, in a move that has stripped him of most of his authority.

Two people who spoke under the condition of anonymity who were familiar with the DOJ move told The Washington Post on Monday that Martin was sidelined and will no longer chair the DOJ's Weaponization Working Group, "which was tasked with reviewing special counsel Jack Smith’s prosecutions of Trump and other perceived examples of 'prosecutorial abuse.'" The decision has not yet been announced publicly.

Martin, who has not been at the DOJ for a year, was expected to leave the department entirely, CNN reported. He was initially picked to help implement Trump's key priorities. The Weaponization Group has not released any information, but will apparently meet daily. Trump has been critical that the DOJ has not been active enough to pursue legal action against his political enemies. ...

Another Senate embarrassment looms for embattled Trump prosecutor: reports

Interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan was expected to get another round of embarrassment from Senate Democrats, according to reports Friday.

President Donald Trump's former attorney and pick for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia has continued her role — despite calls for her to resign — while the Trump administration has pushed forward her nomination in the Senate, according to The Daily Beast.

Two Virginia senators were expected to block Halligan "using internal veto power by refusing to return a blue slip that indicates support for a home-state judicial nominee," Semafor reported. ...

'The ham sandwich wins': Trump admin shamed over another failure to indict Trump foe

Amused observers weighed in Thursday after President Donald Trump's Justice Department failed again to prosecute New York Attorney General Letitia James and suffered yet another embarrassing attempt.

A grand jury in Virginia refused to return a fraud indictment against James — who Trump has called an enemy — the second time this has happened since the original case against her was thrown out.

Social media observers applauded the news....

'Jaw dropping': Legal expert says Trump pick's bold move is daring judges to take action

A legal expert said Wednesday that interim U.S. attorney Lindsey Halligan — despite calls for her to resign — has continued her role.

Legal expert Lisa Rubin told MS NOW's Ana Cabrera that Halligan has not left her position while pressure mounts for her to step down.

"Lindsey Halligan is still in her job and she is signing, or rather, lying," Rubin said. "Prosecutors are signing criminal filings in the Eastern District of Virginia in her name, which is typical." ...
