GOP chair accused of pressuring reporter into silence after false affair rumor

A seasoned Capitol Hill reporter alleged Thursday that a leader in the GOP pressured her to avoid doing anything to risk exposing another former Republican congressman's extramarital affair.

Former Axios reporter Juliegrace Brufke wrote in a Thursday post on her blog Sources Say that House Administration Chair Bryan Steil, (R-WI) tried to talk her out of taking legal action after she was drawn into the fallout of an affair between former GOP Rep. Mark Green and a 32-year-old political fundraiser in 2023.

"Much of Congress is filled with people who, frankly, weren’t the most popular kids in high school or college, who suddenly find themselves surrounded by young staffers, interns and lobbyists impressed by their power," Brufke wrote. 'It will send shockwaves': Democrats hope to flip House seat in deep red state

Democrats are hoping to flip a House seat in a deep red state, eyeing Trump country in an upcoming special election to replace retired GOP Rep. Mark Green.

Trump carried the district by more than 20 points in November 2024 and now Democrats are seeing the recent election day gains last week as a potential path to victory.

“It really feels like there’s so much momentum on the ground,” Democratic nominee and Tennessee state representative Aftyn Behn told Politico. “The national attention is on this race and on Tennessee.”...

'It's a mystery!' Another powerful GOP committee leader's retirement spawns speculation

Republicans are losing yet another high-ranking House committee leader to retirement.

Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) announced that he wouldn't seek re-election on Wednesday afternoon, after just a single term in charge of the House Homeland Security Committee. Earlier in the day, he had denied he was retiring to CNN's Melanie Zanona and Politico's Olivia Beavers, even calling it a "weird question" — but later confirmed it.

"At the start of the 118th Congress, I promised my constituents to pass legislation to secure our borders and hold [Homeland Security] Secretary Mayorkas accountable," said Green in a statement. "Today, with the House having passed H.R. 2 and Secretary Mayorkas impeached, it is time for me to return home."...
