US judge denies Ghislaine Maxwell request for new trial

New York (AFP) - A request for a new trial by Ghislaine Maxwell, the former Jeffrey Epstein associate who was convicted of child sex trafficking late last year, was denied Friday by a federal judge in New York. Maxwell's lawyers filed for a retrial in January after juror Scotty David -- identified by his first and middle names -- told media outlets he had persuaded fellow panelists to convict the 60-year-old by recalling his own experiences as a sex abuse victim, a fact he did not reveal during jury selection. Maxwell, a disgraced British socialite, was convicted of recruiting and grooming you......

Maxwell to be sentenced for sex trafficking in June

New York (AFP) - Ghislaine Maxwell, the disgraced British socialite convicted of recruiting and grooming young girls to be sexually abused by the late US financier Jeffrey Epstein, will be sentenced in June, a US judge said Friday. "The Court hereby schedules the sentencing in this matter for June 28, 2022, at 11:00 am," a court document signed by New York District judge Alison Nathan said.  Maxwell potentially faces life behind bars.  Her trial and conviction last month for assisting Epstein -- who hanged himself in his New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial -- exposed a murky world ......

Maxwell jury ends third full day of deliberations without verdict

New York (AFP) - Jurors in Ghislaine Maxwell's sex crimes trial ended their third full day of deliberations Monday without reaching a verdict in a case that could see the British socialite spend the rest of her life behind bars. Maxwell, who turned 60 on Christmas Day, is accused of recruiting and grooming young girls to be sexually abused by the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein. The 12-person jury began considering Maxwell's fate on December 20 after a three-week trial and were granted a holiday break from Thursday. The jury reconvened on Monday morning and sent a note to Judge Alison ......

'Lady of the house' Maxwell controlled Epstein mansion: ex-employee

New York (AFP) - Ghislaine Maxwell tightly regulated every detail in Jeffrey Epstein's Palm Beach mansion as "lady of the house," a former employee testified Thursday during the British heiress' sex trafficking trial. Juan Alessi, who worked as a house manager for the multimillionaire Epstein for more than a decade in the 1990s, told jurors at the Manhattan trial that Maxwell ordered a "tremendous" number of rules, including warning to avoid eye contact with Epstein. "'Never look at his eyes, look in another part of the room and answer him,'" Alessi, who worked at the Palm Beach, Florida estat......

Ghislaine Maxwell, the defrocked socialite on trial over Epstein sex ring

New York (AFP) - A friend to British royalty who romanced billionaires and dazzled elites, Ghislaine Maxwell was once the toast of the jet-set party circuit, a knows-everybody socialite with an aura of mystique. But now the daughter of late British newspaper baron Robert Maxwell passes her days in a Brooklyn jail cell she's branded inhumane, complaining of rats and rotten food, as she awaits her trial -- set to begin Monday -- on charges of sex trafficking minors with the late Jeffrey Epstein. She faces up to 80 years in prison if convicted of conspiring to run a sex crimes ring, which prosecu......
