River rescues and barbed wire: Just another day at the US-Mexico border

Eagle Pass (United States) (AFP) - The sun had barely risen above Eagle Pass, Texas, when the migrants wading across the Rio Grande from Mexico had a crisis on their hands. They had tied their belts together to create a makeshift rope to hold onto but it broke, and the river was sweeping away a mother and her one-year-old baby. Such harrowing scenes are a daily occurrence on the southern US border, where thousands are crossing each day in search of their own American dream despite the dangers to themselves, efforts by Texas authorities to keep them out and gridlock on the national level about ......

Migrants' perilous trip past buoys, razor wire to reach Texas

Eagle Pass (United States) (AFP) - With their two children on their shoulders, Wilfredo Riera and Nataly Barrionuevo wade into the Rio Grande from the Mexican shore, the water soon reaching their waists.  Avoiding the string of large orange buoys placed by Texas authorities to block their passage, they slog on towards the United States. From their starting point at Piedras Negras in Mexico's Coahuila state, they cross to Eagle Pass in south Texas, where that state's governor, Greg Abbott, has deployed the military in an effort to stem the migrant flow. It is 2:00 pm (1200 GMT) on a Friday, wit......

US plan keeps migrants waiting farther from border

San José (AFP) - The opening of US migrant processing centers in Colombia, Costa Rica and Guatemala ensures that more than ever these countries will become waiting rooms for asylum seekers wanting American visas.  The "Safe Mobility" initiative rolled out by Washington in Central America -- the main corridor for tens of thousands hoping to reach the United States without visas -- attempts to expand legal pathways for asylum seekers while keeping them in countries farther from the US border. The new program started May 11 with the end of Title 42, which had allowed US authorities to return migr......

New rules spur migrants to seek legal path to US

Matamoros (Mexico) (AFP) - With tough new asylum rules in place, many migrants on the US-Mexico border were seeking legal routes to enter the United States on Saturday, despite warnings of a chaotic surge in crossings. Gustavo Rodriguez, who fled Venezuela after deserting the military, was among those who saw official channels as offering the best chance of being allowed to stay on US soil. "I want to enter legally," he told AFP in Matamoros, one of several Mexican cities along the border where thousands of migrants fleeing poverty, crime or persecution are gathered. US President Joe Biden's r......

Cuban Elian Gonzalez, rescued at sea as boy, now running for parliament

Havana (AFP) - Now age 29, Elian Gonzalez has grown up from the child whose 1999 family crisis became the unwitting symbol for the breakdown of Washington-Havana relations to this week becoming a candidate for a seat in Cuba's parliament. State newspaper Granma on Monday released the list of the 470 candidates running for a spot in the upcoming session of the National Assembly of People's Power, which included Gonzalez, who is currently an executive at a public company. Gonzalez first gained international notoriety when on Thanksgiving Day 1999 fishermen rescued the five-year-old from a flimsy......

Mexico breaks up migrant camp near US border

Tijuana (Mexico) (AFP) - Authorities on Sunday broke up a camp of about 380 migrants, mostly from Mexico and Central America, in Tijuana, near the US border.  Mexican migration officials announced that they were trying to relocate the people in the area just south of San Diego, California. Migrants were told they would be allowed to bring to shelters three changes of clothes but not additional items. "There were people who began to leave and began to climb of their own free will, without using public force, onto the trucks that go to the different shelters," the city's mayor, Montserrat Caball......
