'New level of cringe': Social media erupts as NATO chief calls Trump 'daddy'

At the Hague on Tuesday, president Donald Trump used the same schoolyard fight allegory to talk about Israel and Iran as he used when talking recently about Russia and Ukraine.

"They're not going to be fighting each other — they've had it. They've had a big fight," Trump said of the bombs exchanged by the two Mideast nations.

"Like two kids in a schoolyard, you know? They fight like hell, you can't stop them. Let them fight for about two, three minutes, then it's easier to stop them."...

Dutchman confesses to 2005 murder of American teen in Aruba

Washington (AFP) - A Dutchman who was the prime suspect in the 2005 disappearance of an American woman vacationing in Aruba has confessed to her murder, prosecutors and the victim's family said Wednesday. Joran van der Sloot, 36, as part of a guilty plea entered in a related case, confessed to killing Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean island, they said. Holloway, 18, disappeared while on a high school graduation trip to Aruba. Her body has never been found. Van der Sloot pleaded guilty during a court hearing in Birmingham, Alabama, on Wednesday to attempting to extort money from Holloway's mot......

Dutch king offers official apology 150 years after slavery abolished

The Dutch king apologized for the sufferings of hundreds of thousands of people under slavery and asked for forgiveness on the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the Netherlands. His apology comes from the bottom of his heart and soul, King Willem-Alexander said at an event in Amsterdam to mark the national event. "Of all forms of bondage, slavery is the most degrading and inhumane." His apology echoes that made by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on behalf of the Netherlands and the king at the end of last year. The Netherlands was one of the largest colonial powers in the world ......

Amsterdam sex workers protest new rules seeking to tame red light district

Sex workers in Amsterdam say they are being unfairly targeted by city plans to tame its red light district. Known as De Wallen, the city’s centuries-old district takes its nickname from the red neon lights that highlight the 300 windows where sex workers can offer their services. But the Dutch capital’s famed prostitution windows will now close earlier — and they could soon move to a different part of town. Amsterdam officials say a set of reforms designed to rebrand the city’s wild image will help reduce crime and nuisance behavior in the area, but opponents of the measure say the move will o......
Windmill offers a spin through history in Holland, Michigan

Windmill offers a spin through history in Holland, Michigan

HOLLAND, Mich. — Come for the Dutch heritage, stay for the bullet holes. In 1961, an idea was proposed to bring an authentic windmill from the Netherlands to Holland to celebrate the city's Dutch heritage. The country, though, had recently banned the export of windmills. After three years of negotiations, a suitable mill for export was found in the village of Vinkel in the North Brabant province. Built in 1884 with pieces from at least two other windmills, De Zwaan, which means "the swan" in Dutch, is 125 feet tall from the ground to the tip of the blades. The grain mill was in disrepair and b......

Germany's flood crisis deepens with dozens dead and scores missing

Germany's flood crisis escalated on Thursday with the army deployed to the worst-hit areas of the country amid mass evacuations, reports of missing persons and a rising death toll. At least 58 people are confirmed dead after being unable to escape the raging flood waters that engulfed parts of western Germany following days of torrential rain. In the city of Cologne alone, police on Thursday confirmed the deaths of 20 people in the floods. Flooding has also devastated parts of the Netherlands and Belgium. In the small Eifel region town of Schuld, in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate, fo......
