Man hangs self in Grand Central Station NYC subway tunnel

NEW YORK — A man hanged himself inside a subway tunnel at Grand Central Station, police said Monday. The man, whose age and name are not yet clear, was found about 5:15 a.m. Saturday by a transit worker about 100 feet into the No. 7 train tunnel. Gruesome video posted on X shows the man, clad in a gray hoodie and dark-colored jacket, hanging not far from the ground in what appears to be a recess in the tunnel. NYPD cops are seen preparing to remove him and place him in a white body bag. Police said it appears the man hanged himself from a wire....

Twitch star Kai Cenat condemns NYC Union Square riot he sparked

NEW YORK — Holding up the front page of the New York Daily News, Twitch star Kai Cenat decried the riot that erupted at Union Square during his planned PlayStation giveaway last week. “Bro!” Cenat yelled during a Twitch live stream Wednesday night already viewed nearly a million times. “This is f---ing insane!” Wearing a “Dr. Pepper” T-shirt and large headphones, Cenat started the 19-minute stream, his first comments on the chaos, holding up the cover of Saturday’s Daily News headlined “Union Square Chaos.” He then thumbed through the paper, showing his followers the two-page spread on the may......

Witness to Malcolm X assassination comes forward with account questioning NYPD response

NEW YORK — Cops racing to the assassination of Malcolm X in 1965 stopped the civil rights leader’s followers from beating a suspected gunman caught at the scene, with the police asking each other, “Is he with us?” according to bombshell testimony released Tuesday. Speaking out for the first time, Mustafa Hassan recounted the bedlam during the Feb. 21, 1965 killing and how he tried to stop a man running from the scene with a gun — but was held back by responding officers. “He was being beaten by Malcolm’s followers while a group of policemen ... suddenly showed up on the scene asking, ‘Is he wi......

Tenants, landlords square off as NYC rent hikes could climb a staggering 15.75%

NEW YORK — Tenant advocates and landlords are stepping up the pressure ahead of a crucial preliminary vote next week by the Rent Guidelines Board — which has said it could potentially raise rates on two-year leases a staggering 15.75%. A recent report detailed a range of possible rent hikes on the city’s one million rent-stabilized apartments. On the low end: 5.3% for one-year leases and 6.6% for two-year leases, versus 8.25% and 15.75% on the higher end. The board is still zeroing in on a final number, but a final vote is not expected until June. Last year the board approved the largest rent ......

Elizabeth Holmes responds to feds’ demand she pay $878 million: Crimes didn’t kill Theranos

Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, fighting a $900 million restitution demand, claims her crimes were not proven to have caused her blood testing startup’s collapse, and her deceptions did not generate all the money investors poured into her firm. Federal prosecutors last month filed a motion asking Judge Edward Davila to order Holmes, convicted in January 2022 of four counts of defrauding investors in her now-defunct Palo Alto startup, to pay $878 million in restitution. Davila sentenced Holmes in November to more than 11 years in prison, ordering her to start imprisonment April 27, a date sh......

New York’s snow-less streak ties major record, nears another

NEW YORK — New York City records are falling — because snow isn’t. The city is poised to break a 50-year-old record Monday for the latest day of winter without the first measurable snowfall — a mark previously set Jan. 29, 1973, according to AccuWeather. New York is also closing in on its longest stretch of consecutive days without measurable snowfall, which meteorologists consider one-tenth of an inch. Sunday marked the 326th such day in a row, trailing only the 332-day streak set in 2020. With no snow in the forecast this week, New York is on track to break that record next Sunday. “It’s not......
