'Embarrassing fail': NY Times roasted for quoting severed finger fraudster in poll writeup

The New York Times is taking heavy mockery after inadvertently citing a nationally famous convicted fraudster as an everyday voter.

The paper profiled some voters in their latest poll with Siena College released on Thursday, which shows former President Donald Trump's lead shrinking considerably and Vice President Kamala Harris locked in a neck-and-neck race. One of the voters they quoted, however, wasn't swayed by the shakeup in the race.

"'I'm a Democrat, but I've changed my mind after everything that's happened with Joe Biden's administration,' said Anna Ayala, a 58-year-old who lives in San Jose, Calif., and voted for Mr. Biden in 2020," said the writeup. "She plans to vote for Mr. Trump in 2024. 'I mean, the border situation is out of control.'"...

I don't really have time now to blog, because I'm going to the WAM! conference in New York, but I thought I'd tell you a little story about the history of blogging, which is what I'm going to speak about.

NY Times gets it almost right

NY Times gets it almost right

[rebelmouse-image 24749245 original_size="190x339" expand=1]Round two on the NY Times struggling with the shocking! information that some men will actually allow themselves to be married to a woman with more education or income. Round one featured blatant denial---even though the research indicated that the number of marriages where women make more is rising, the Times ran a story that featured a bunch of single women swearing that they can't get a date because they're too smart or rich. I don't know if round two was run in reaction to a bunch of bloggers pointing out that stories about these marriages might actually be a better illustration of a story about these marriages, but that's what they did this time out. Subsequently, the story is much better. It's interesting to read about how people who buck the gender roles they were brought up with struggle sometimes not to lapse into roles they've decided don't work for them. It makes sense that many women unintentionally sabotage the situation by trying to exert control over their husbands' domestic choices, and how you really have to not do that if you want the situation to work. And that even well-meaning men have trouble shaking off thousands of cultural messages about how you're emasculated if your wife makes more money than you.

Shorter NY Times: Screw the stats, women are desperate

Shorter NY Times: Screw the stats, women are desperate

I'll confess; when this article came out in the NY Times about how more marriages are ones where the wife makes more/has more education, I didn't read it. I thought, "Duh." I read Matt write about it, and made fun of the wingnut in his comment thread who tried to claim that women don't pay taxes, and then went off on a baffling attempt to backtrack while still maintaining that women are an inferior sex who shouldn't earn money. I appreciated the graphs Matt put up that demonstrated that equality is far from here:

A week at the LA Times

A week at the LA Times

In a pure coincidence that is nonetheless pretty damn funny, the same day I put up a satirical bleg asking for the NY Times or some similar magazine to profile me, I got a request from the LA Times to do their week-long Dust Up column. It's one of those back-and-forth things, and the topic is feminism and politics. I was concerned they'd put me up against someone anti-feminist and I'd be spending all my time knitting my brows in irritation, but luckily, the other writer is Katha Pollitt. You can read the first day here.
