Oxford superintendent, 2 assistants get much blame in Michigan school shooting: report

DETROIT — Missteps and failures by Oxford Community School's former superintendent and two former members of his Cabinet snowballed to allow the Oxford High School shooter to slip through the school's threat assessment and suicide intervention systems and carry out Michigan's worst school shooting, according to a 572-page report issued late Monday night. Investigators with Guidepost Solutions, the organization that conducted the first independent investigation into the Nov. 30, 2021, attack at Oxford High School, laid blame for the shooting on Tim Throne, who was superintendent at the time of ......

Horizon Air cockpit scare revives pilot mental health concerns

An off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot’s alleged midair sabotage attempt of a Horizon Air flight from Seattle to San Francisco on Sunday — and the pilot’s later admission that he had been depressed — highlights the major concerns that pilot mental health poses to the airline industry. It was an issue that came to international attention when a Germanwings copilot in 2015 locked the captain out of the cockpit midflight and deliberately dove their Airbus into the French Alps, killing all 150 aboard. At that time, the FAA reviewed and revised its mental health policies for flight crews. But experts sa......

First week of Dominguez competency trial: Experts lay out Davis stabbings suspect’s mental spiral

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A forensic neuropsychologist testified on Friday that he found a frail young man most likely suffering from his first break of schizophrenia when he first met Carlos Reales Dominguez, who is accused of a brutal stabbing spree in Davis that ended with his arrest three months ago. Dale Watson, the forensic neuropsychologist, was in Yolo Superior Court in Woodland for the fifth day of Reales Dominguez’s mental competency trial. His testimony wrapped up the first week of the trial, which will reconvene Aug. 7. Guilt or innocence in the stabbings is not in question — the jury i......

Highland Park, a year later: Use of state’s ‘red flag’ gun laws jumps in wake of parade killings

In the immediate aftermath of last year’s mass shooting at Highland Park’s Fourth of July parade came the expected questions when such a tragedy unfolds: Who was the gunman? Where had his weapon come from? And in Illinois, a state run by gun control-minded Democrats, could laws be bolstered and were police using them as effectively as possible? Experts have suggested what was on the books — if properly understood and implemented — potentially could have prevented the alleged shooter from obtaining the high-powered semi-automatic rifle used to rain bullets down on paradegoers, killing seven and......

Kansas boy dealing with bullying, racism brought knife to school. Now he faces a felony

He was called the n-word. He was turned away from a table of white students. He was told to “go back to picking cotton.” But after reporting these acts of racism to school officials in the rural town of Ottawa, Kansas, the mother of the 12-year-old bi-racial boy being targeted said her son didn’t trust adults at the school to protect him from his bullies. In fact, the mom said since the family moved to Ottawa in 2019, he’d dealt with repeated acts of racism and bullying. The Star is withholding their names for their safety. Time after time, his mother said she told school officials to address ......
