Thousands of Florida homes flood repeatedly — but you’re not allowed to know which ones

MIAMI -- Between “rain bombs” and drenching from no-name storms, hundreds of homes in South Florida have experienced damaging flooding in the last year alone. But an exact count of flood-prone homes in South Florida — and where and how often they flood — has been all but impossible to pin down. Newly released data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency puts some hard numbers to a problem that climate change promises to make worse in the coming decades. Thousands of homes across the state have endured water damage more than once. It’s a number that is growing across the state, in part bec......

Human head found in freezer of newly sold Colorado home

Authorities are investigating a potential homicide after a human head was found in a freezer at a newly sold Colorado home. Mesa County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a suspicious incident report around 2:30 p.m. last Friday at a property in Grand Junction, just east of the Utah state line. The homeowners, who had recently bought the house, found a bag with possible human remains in it in a chest freezer. Authorities later confirmed it was a human head. The new owners were cleaning up around the property and included the freezer in an online “free stuff” listing. The head was found aft......

Airbnb sued over ‘horror movie’ vacation rental with bat infestation

A group of women has filed suit against Airbnb, claiming their Michigan vacation rental was infested with bats that attacked them. The claimants rented “The Castle,” a Victorian-style house in Alpena for their 50th high school reunion in late July, according to the lawsuit, which was filed by Detroit-based Marko Law. “This is every renter’s worst nightmare. What was supposed to be a fun vacation turned into a house of horror for my clients. No one expects to be attacked by a horde of bats,” attorney Jon Marko said in the press release. “This played out like a scene from a Halloween horror movi......

The Aug. 11 raid was quickly met with condemnation from free speech advocates around the country and even internationally. According to documents published Friday by the 8th Judicial District, police seized 18 items. That included the computer towers of pu......

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia’s Middleton family, leading developers in the downtown area in recent years, made a sizable profit when they sold their share in a local hospice business two years ago. Rather than pocket the income, the family invested those earnings in one of their biggest development ventures to date: a 65,000-square-foot production brewery and restaurant north of downtown. Downtown’s Main Street is packed with Middleton businesses, including a boutique bowling alley, a dueling piano bar and a hibachi restaurant. But the family chose to locate Peak Drift Brewery somewhere less flas......

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For Vivian Jackson, life at theEmanuel Cleaver II Senior Living Community center hasn’t delivered on the quality housing, relaxed atmosphere and welcoming community that was promised. Instead, it’s been a nightmare. In the span of three years living there, Jackson, a retired teacher, has been injured several times when her apartment repeatedly flooded. She has found management careless in responding to her problems and making repairs. Worse, the property managers are now accusing the 68-year-old grandmother of throwing disruptive parties with loud music and excessive number......
