Black bear steals 60 cupcakes from Connecticut bakery

A black bear is being blamed for devouring 60 cupcakes at a central Connecticut bakery, then wandering away. Taste by Spellbound owner Miriam Stephens wrote about the encounter on Instagram, where she claimed the interloper entered her bakery’s garage and helped itself to dozens of pastries being loaded into a delivery van. An employee named Maureen first made the grisly discovery. “All [of a] sudden, we hear her screaming bloody murder and then yelling, ‘There’s a bear in garage!’” Stephens said. The frightened staffer ran back inside the bakery and slammed shut a door connecting the garage t......

Migrating professionals grow black middle class in the South and West

Erika Harrison, a Houston attorney who has lived in the area since she was 5, started her blog, Black Girls Who Brunch, “to showcase the vibrant food scene beyond the franchise restaurants.” But recently, the blog has grown into much more than that. In addition to providing restaurant recommendations, Harrison has become a connector for many of the Black professionals who are flocking to her city. “Black professionals who move here are coming for the perceived Black excellence. I constantly hear, ‘I know Black people do well in Houston, so that’s why I’m here,’” Harrison said. “It’s doctors, l......

DeSantis migrant flights could last until June, records show

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Vertol Systems has until the end of next June to run through the $12 million approved by the Legislature for what critics have called a “political stunt” — relocating as many migrants as it can from Florida to other states and the District of Columbia, records released late Friday show. The request for bids, quotes from vendors, emails and other related documents show that Destin-based Vertol Systems beat out two other vendors for the operation, which so far has resulted in sending 48 migrants on two planes to Martha’s Vineyard and an apparently scrapped flight to Delaware.......

Applebees franchise executive is happy about higher gas prices

By Tom Bemis Says in leaked email that they will make it easier to hire desperate paycheck-to-paycheck employees at lower wages. An executive at a company that operates Applebee’s and Taco Bell franchises in several states has reportedly sent an email gloating that higher gas prices will make it easier to pressure potential employees to accept lower wages. The email, posted on a Reddit sub-channel this week, outlined a theory that higher gas prices would make potential employees more desperate for work and therefore more willing to accept lower pay. “Most of our employee base and potential emp......

'Not worth it': LA restaurants boost pay to lure wary workers

Los Angeles (AFP) - Businesses have reopened in Los Angeles and elsewhere in the United States, with "We're hiring" signs everywhere. But if life has a pre-Covid feel, a new challenge has arisen for restaurants: workers are not willing to return at any cost. "We are dealing with a staffing shortage that I have not experienced in my career," said Skyler Gamble, a manager at Acme Hospitality, which oversees several restaurants in Santa Barbara around two hours' drive north of Los Angeles. "Our experience in the last six to nine months as business levels have rebounded, is that fewer and fewer ca......

Tipped workers still feeling the pandemic crunch

Washington (AFP) - As the number of Covid-19 cases soared in Washington through the fall and winter, Tizoc Zarate waited tables at a local restaurant -- but struggled to put enough food on the table for himself and his girlfriend. Zarate, 22, says he is angry about the health risks he faced, especially given the low pay -- and the lack of support from his bosses. "I felt as if I couldn't say anything to management," Zarate told AFP, adding that at the time, he and his co-workers felt lucky to be working at all.  The Mexican-American server is not alone -- hundreds of restaurant workers and act......
