Spicy ‘One Chip Challenge’ chips removed from store shelves after 14-year-old’s death

The company behind the “One Chip Challenge” is removing its extremely spicy products from store shelves following a teenager’s death. “The Paqui One Chip Challenge is intended for adults only, with clear and prominent labeling highlighting the chip is not for children,” Paqui wrote in a statement. “We have seen an increase in teens and other individuals not heeding these warnings,” they added. “As a result, while the product continues to adhere to food safety standards, out of an abundance of caution, we are actively working with our retailers to remove the product from shelves.” Paqui issued ......

Colleagues mourn new Harlem supermarket worker beaten to death sweeping sidewalk by homeless man with wooden plank

A new employee sweeping the sidewalk outside a Harlem supermarket was beaten to death with a wooden plank by a homeless man, cops and distraught colleagues said Tuesday. Bernardo Gonzalez Perez, 63, was excited he had just cashed his paycheck when he clashed with a homeless man around noon June 7 outside Food Universe on W. 138th St. near Broadway, police said. He’d only been working the new job for a couple of weeks. As their quarrel escalated, Carlos Ramirez, 48, picked up a “large plank of wood” and hit Gonzalez Perez “in the head several times” with it, leaving the older man with a massive......

States scramble to replace ripped-off SNAP benefits

Last September, when Baltimore resident Tzu Yang went grocery shopping for his intellectually disabled daughter with a food benefits card that he thought was worth about $300, he discovered at the checkout that the card had no value left. The same thing happened in October, November and December. The benefits meant for Hawlie Yang, age 37 but with the mental capacity of a 5-year-old, were being systematically stolen. Tzu Yang contacted local authorities but never got the money back. The stolen electronic benefits were used locally and as far away as New York, he discovered. But neither he nor ......

$11 for a head of California lettuce? Here’s what’s behind the shortage causing ‘outrageous’ prices

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Don’t look now — the price of lettuce is soaring across the Bay Area. It’s $5.99 for a head of romaine at Country Sun Natural Foods in Palo Alto. Nearly $10 for little gem lettuce at Draeger’s Market in Los Altos. And a whopping $10.99 for iceberg at Piedmont Grocery in Oakland. Nationwide, the average cost of a head of romaine is currently just $2.50, according to federal data. But that’s still a 47% jump from October. Produce prices can vary widely across regions and even individual stores due to a range of factors, including local seasonal growing trends and the contracts......
