Afghan TV series 'The Ministry' pokes fun at government

KABUL (Reuters) - Britain and the United States poke fun at incompetent, arrogant middle managers in the television comedy "The Office," but in Afghanistan the target is a fictional minister of garbage in a new series called "The Ministry."

Republicans should rethink this Ten Commandments thing

[rebelmouse-image 24750063 original_size="322x399" expand=1]Happy Zombie Jesus Day!  A couple of weeks ago, the Wall Street Journal let outspoken atheist Ricky Gervais write an article explaining how he follows the Ten Commandments better than most Christians.  It was amusing, but I feel he missed talking about one of the strangest ways that the Ten Commandments crops up in the modern era, which is because right wing nuts are pushing the list of ancient pronouncements of Yahweh to the Hebrews as some kind of moral formula for 21st century Americans. Louie Gomert in Texas is the latest example, as he's trying to get Texas to recognize "Ten Commandments Weekend" in the first weekend in May.  There's only one reaction to Republicans doing this nonsense, which is to try to catch them unawares and ask them to recite the Ten Commandments, which always has hilarious results.  Conservatives like the idea of the Ten Commandments, but don't know much about the actual Commandments themselves.  They just get hard thinking of commanding stuff.

Bamboo Review: The Invention of Lying

Bamboo Review: The Invention of Lying

[rebelmouse-image 24749075 original_size="1920x1080" expand=1]A number of folks requested a review of the new Ricky Gervais movie The Invention of Lying, and I'm a big fan of Gervais (especially his podcast), and so we went to see it last night. And it's one of the most clear-cut examples I've seen in a long time where a movie is brilliant for the first half, and then completely falls apart in the second half, and it's especially disappointing to see Gervais---who created realistic and even touching romances on his TV series "The Office" and "Extras"---pull out an egregious Nice Guy® storyline. Plus, Jennifer Garner's character would have been more fun if it were Tina Fey, instead of shoving the latter into a minor role as a secretary. Though admittedly, one the points of Garner's character is she's outrageously beautiful, and so maybe their hands were tied. But then again, the part blew, which I'll get to, so they should have rewritten it and cast Fey, if she'd have them.
