Vandal scrawls swastikas on Bronx autism school as hate crimes against Jews continue to spike

A vandal drew swastikas and the letter “K” multiple times on a Bronx school for autistic students, police said Wednesday. The defacement comes as hate crimes against Jews in the city continue to spike as the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict in Gaza continues. The scrawler was caught on surveillance camera walking up to the Autism Care Partners building on Jerome Ave. near E. 181st St. in University Heights at about 5 a.m. on Oct. 26. He was spotted pulling out a small marker and writing on a door before walking off. No arrests have been made. In the weeks after the war in Gaza began, bias attack......

2 years after Surfside condo collapse: ‘We haven’t recovered. Don’t forget about us’

MIAMI — In the two years since his family’s condominium was destroyed in the collapse of Champlain Towers South, Gabe Nir has moved 10 times. He has been unable to find a new home, and, worse, he cannot find peace. Nir, 27, was one of only four people living in the Surfside condo who escaped before their section of the building fell. Three others were rescued from the rubble. When the 12-story tower came down at 1:22 a.m. on June 24, 2021, likely as a result of 40-year-old design and construction flaws, 98 people ranging in age from 2 to 92 died. Nir, his mother and his sister ran for their li......

DeSantis’ call for state to inspect Disney rides doesn’t fly

ORLANDO, Fla. — State officials will not take over Space Mountain or other Disney World ride inspections soon, despite Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis saying it would happen. State lawmakers in the session that ended May 5 did not consider a bill for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to assume responsibility for Disney World’s ride inspections after DeSantis proposed doing that in mid-April amid his feud with the company over Florida’s so-called “don’t say gay” law. Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson appeared to support the idea at the time, but a spokesman for his off......

CNN team robbed while working on San Francisco street crime story

CNN Senior National Correspondent Kyung Lah and a senior producer were robbed in San Francisco while working on a story about “rampant street crime.” “Got robbed again,” Lah tweeted Friday afternoon. Lah said she and CNN’s Jason Kravarik were inside City Hall when thieves smashed their way into a car being watched by security guards and made off with items including her passport. According to Lah, who posted a photo of a smashed rear window, the thieves were gone in under four seconds. “But seriously — this is ridiculous,” she wrote. Security guards hired to watch the CNN team’s rental car and......

As threats rattle KC schools, Missouri doesn’t give districts money to bolster safety

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri’s state budget is set to grow to nearly $50 billion, but the sprawling spending plan provides no direct funding to schools to improve safety. The state is instead poised to provide $1 million to a center that helps train educators and $2 million on an app that will connect schools statewide with emergency services during a crisis. Several Kansas City-area school districts canceled summer programs on Wednesday in response to the threat of a mass shooting. A 19-year-old Blue Springs resident was arrested, Blue Springs police said. A bomb threat also prompted the clear......

NYC subway surveillance camera video feeds failed during shooting as MTA moves to beef up system

NEW YORK — Faulty computer systems prevented surveillance cameras at two Brooklyn stations from getting pictures of the gunman who sprayed bullets on a subway train on Tuesday, MTA officials said. A server problem darkened the camera feeds at the 36th Street station on the N line, where alleged gunman Frank James ended his shooting spree, the officials said. The feeds were also out at the 25th Street station in the R line, where the cops said James fled by train after his attack. The problems prevented police and MTA officials from monitoring live pictures of the situation, and kept the system......
