Judge scraps Arkansas law banning gender transition treatment in minors

Washington (AFP) - A US federal judge on Tuesday struck down a law prohibiting minors from gender transition treatment in Arkansas, the first time such a restriction has been overturned as similar laws are enacted in Republican-led states.  Judge Jay Moody ruled the law was unconstitutional because it violated the rights of doctors to provide medical care and discriminates against transgender people. "The evidence showed that the prohibited medical care improves the mental health and well-being of patients and that, by prohibiting it, the state undermined the interests it claims to be advancin......

Biden, 80, to undergo medical checkup ahead of potential 2024 bid

Washington (AFP) - Joe Biden will complete a routine medical checkup on Thursday, a crucial step for the oldest-ever US president ahead of his expected fight for reelection in 2024. The White House has promised to release the report by the 80-year-old president's doctor, as it also did during his previous checkup in 2021.   This time around, with the Republican 2024 campaign already kicking off, it will be scrutinized even more closely. Despite poor poll ratings, Biden -- a Democrat -- has been suggesting for some time that he intends to run again, potentially lining up a rematch of his 2020 b......

In a Florida 'food desert' there is a gnawing sense of being left behind

Jacksonville (AFP) - Sitting outside her modest home in Jacksonville, Florida, on a street lined with nondescript buildings in faded shades of blue, a weary Brenda Jenkins expresses a simple wish: to be able to buy fresh fruit and produce in her own neighborhood. It sounds simple enough. But for people like her, one of the 39 million Americans living in "food deserts" -- most of them low-income urban dwellers, and predominantly people of color -- fresh food is practically inaccessible. In a country with often poor mass transit and persistent pockets of poverty, getting to grocery stores that s......

Abortion access threatened in half of US states

Washington (AFP) - The US Supreme Court's overturning of America's constitutional right to abortion gives all 50 states the freedom to ban the procedure, with nearly half expected to do so in some form. Automatic bansThirteen states, mostly in the conservative and religious south of the country, have in recent years adopted so-called "trigger" laws to come into force virtually automatically after the decision was handed down. And as of Friday evening, at least seven states had banned the procedure: Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.  Other states, suc......

America's tallest man dies at age 38

Washington (AFP) - The tallest man in America -- he stood 7 feet 8 inches (2.35 meters) -- has died of a heart problem at the age of 38, his mother said on Facebook. Ukrainian-born Igor Vovkovinskiy had a condition called pituitary gigantism that caused excessive secretion of growth hormone. His mother, who said her son died Friday in Minnesota, had brought him from their home in Ukraine in 1989 to get medical treatment at the Mayo Clinic in the northern US state.  Two surgeries saved his life but failed to stop his growth. At age 27, Guinness World Records declared Vovkovinskiy the tallest pe......

Donuts and hangouts: US kicks off Covid vaccination for teens

Bloomfield Hills (United States) (AFP) - Harrison Hunger, 14, received his Covid shot at a clinic in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, on Thursday and now has pastries on his mind. Asked what he plans to do first, the teen doesn't skip a beat: "Probably go to Krispy Kreme, because they are offering free donuts to people with one of these," he says, showing off his vaccine card. The campaign to immunize America's 17 million adolescents aged 12-to-15 kicked off in full force on Thursday, a key part of President Joe Biden's strategy to push the country toward herd immunity. Across the country, kids lin......
