Fireworks loom as Republicans deliver 'big break for Jack Smith' with hearing: analysts

Senate Republicans' plan to grill former special counsel Jack Smith next week could backfire on them, according to legal analyst Michael Popok.

Smith is set to testify Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), at a hearing Republicans have titled "Oversight of Jack Smith's Abuse of Authority and the Targeting of Republicans."

"It's a big break for Jack Smith. He's the one who's been pushing to testify publicly," Popok's guest, MeidasTouch Washington bureau chief Scott MacFarlane, said on the Legal AF program. "Jack Smith wants the scrutiny of the fishbowl because he doesn't want to be lied about."...

'Demented' MAGA senator panics colleague who fears he'll 'tee up a coup d’etat'

A top Democrat sounded the alarm on the actions of a MAGA senator and feared he'll "tee up a coup d'etat."

During an interview on Bulwark Takes, Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) shared his thoughts on remarks made earlier this week by Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), in which he questioned the legitimacy of several Democratic senators.

"If you want to rot your brain really quickly, you'll read Tommy Tuberville quotes," Himes said, telling host Sam Stein that he hadn't heard the comments. Stein explained that Tuberville's comments came as reports circulated that Trump would declare Georgia's two Democratic U.S. senators, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, illegitimate amid his push to find voter fraud in the state....

Senate GOP shoots down effort to kill Trump slush fund — despite 3 Republicans flipping

Senate Republicans defeated the first attempt by Democrats to permanently block Trump's $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund, the New York Times reported.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), the Senate minority leader, motioned to prohibit the fund by adding an amendment to an immigration bill, according to the NYT.

The motion failed 50 to 49, with three Republicans joining the Democrats, including senators running to keep their seats in November, such as Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), Jon Husted (R-OH), and Dan Sullivan (R-AK), per the NYT. ...

Trump 'at war with Senate Republicans' will need a favor from GOP lawmaker he betrayed

Trump 'at war with Senate Republicans' will need a favor from GOP lawmaker he betrayed

President Donald Trump's move to push out a longtime Republican ally could backfire — because he now needs his help, according to reports on Friday.

Burgess Everett, Semafor congressional bureau chief, pointed out that as Tulsi Gabbard announced her resignation as director of national intelligence, it has left three openings for the Trump administration to fill all while he navigates a more tense relationship with GOP lawmakers in the economic fallout over the Iran war, the White House ballroom funding and his controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” fund.

"Upshot from Gabbard resigning: Trump now has three Cabinet vacancies (Labor, AG) while he's basically at war with Senate Republicans," Everett wrote in a post on X....

'Good for the country': Dan Rather finds hope in the GOP's 'never-ending trainwreck'

Veteran journalist Dan Rather sees potential good that can come out of the GOP's "never-ending trainwreck" playing out before him.

In his latest Substack piece, Rather wrote that infighting between Republicans and Trump will "be good for the country" if it manages to nix some of the president's more outrageous plans.

Rather observed how Republicans are responding to the creation of Trump's $1.8 billion slush fund. It was created as part of a settlement for a lawsuit by Trump against the IRS....

TMZ shames Senate Republicans fleeing DC without TSA deal

TMZ called out a pair of Senate Republicans for hitting the road and leaving Washington, D.C., without a TSA deal on Friday.

House GOP lawmakers on Friday rejected a DHS funding bill passed overnight in the Senate, which would exclude federal immigration enforcement agencies from the major spending bill. The move left House Republicans fighting over the next moves just as GOP senators had left town for Easter recess.

TMZ caught Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) heading to board a plane early Friday at Reagan National Airport and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) seated on a flight. ...
