Disney+ will crack down on password sharing this year, boss says

Disney+ is to begin cracking down on password sharing later this year in an effort to boost sign-ups and revenue for the service. Disney chief executive Bob Iger said in an interview with American network CNBC that the streaming platform would start taking action against the behaviour from June in some countries, and then a "full rollout" in September. Many major streaming services are impacted by password sharing – where users share their log-in details with family and friends not in the same household, enabling them to access content without paying for it – despite it being against platform ......

Striking Hollywood writers decry the Uber-ization of their trade

Los Angeles (AFP) - Television and film writers, on strike over the "existential crisis" of a Hollywood dream factory that mistreats the source of its stories, are fed up with seeing their profession become more precarious in the age of streaming. "What the studios are trying to do is basically turn our work into gig work, and make it impossible for writers to have a career," said Sarah Fischer, on the picket line Wednesday outside major studio Warner Bros. After 10 years working as an assistant on major series such as Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," the 30-year-old scribe was only recently......

How Netflix's new password-sharing rules will work

Nearly six years ago, Netflix made a simple claim on Twitter: "Love is sharing a password." A lot of love has been going around since then — more than 100 million Netflix users share passwords with their friends, families, exes and even complete strangers, according to the company's fourth-quarter shareholder letter. But it seems the streaming giant has changed its mind on the meaning of love. On Wednesday, Netflix announced it will begin rolling out new password-sharing rules in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. The announcement comes after Netflix last week updated its online frequent......

Amazon greenlights Ridley Scott's Blade Runner sequel series

Blade Runner looks set to return, after Amazon Studios announced that it's producing a sequel series - called "Blade Runner 2099" - for Prime Video. Ridley Scott, who directed the original 1982 "Blade Runner" movie, is on board as an executive producer, Amazon said on Thursday, as is Silka Louisa (Shining Girls), who also wrote the script. The sci-fi film is set in a dystopian Los Angeles of 2019, where original Blade Runner Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) has to fight insurgent synthetic humans also known as replicas. In the 2017, the Blade Runner universe returned to the screen with Denis Ville......

'She-Hulk' brings 'feminist undertones' to the Marvel world

It's easy to lose track of everything that's going on in the Marvel universe, with countless of superhero movies and shows out there that are often linked on several levels. Tatiana Maslany, who plays the lead in "She-Hulk: Attorney at law," knows the problem well, saying she was glad that Marvel producer Kevin Feige didn't probe her knowledge too much. "He, gratefully, didn't ask me to watch everything," Maslany told dpa in London, laughing. "I think he realizes that it's an enormous universe. I know that there're people who've watched chronologically from the start to the finish. I've not go......

Netflix turning 'Squid Game' into real game show (without executions)

The prize money is a record-setting $4.56 million, except this time you don't die if you lose: Netflix is turning the deadly contest from "Squid Game" into a real-world reality show, albeit with a less brutal ending for unsuccessful contestants. Just like in the hit show, 456 participants will compete against each other in various games, as Netflix announced on Tuesday with a teaser trailer for "Squid Game: The Challenge". "Please note: Win or lose, all players will leave unscathed," the streaming giant says, underlining that - in contrast to the battle royale game organizers in the series - N......
